Angel Island

A crowd favorite with the SoCoPhoGro!

This year we'll walk around the entire island, and if you want, we'll practice Panorama and some HDR as well.

Bring layers, it can get windy.

Bring water and snacks, the walk is a bit long.

Bring your Tripod if you want to practice HDR/Panorama

Bring reflectors or backdrops to practice lighting and close ups of things like bees. :)

We will post the link to the Ferry, as it will cost $13.50 for a round trip ticket, you can pay in cash as we board.

Looking forward to seeing you all!

The Island was great. The ruins, animals (deer) and people.

Great way to spend a Saturday- Thanks Remy and Ray! I loved seeing the open immigration area. The island is a bit difficult to shoot- A- with people crawling all over it, and B- mid day. I much prefer night shooting from Angel Island, but I did see knew things.

Excellent location for photography, but for me...it seemed more like a hiking event than a photography event. By the time we reached the 4 out of the 5 miles, I was so tired that I quite taking pictures. I wish the State Park service had an "on and off" tour for it's visitors.

Your best option for photography is to walk, sadly. I've had good luck with either a stroller or wheeled cart to keep everything off my back.

If I'm reading the TRAM information correctly, it looks like the tour ($15) is one hour long. I guess this means there will be NO, getting off and on throughout the day. That would be ideal. Has anyone ever rented one of those Segways? That's a guided tour also ($50 to $65 for two hours). Requirements: 1. Please wear closed toed shoes. 2. We recommend long pants. 3. Dress in layers, the weather can be quite unpredictable! I am considering bringing my bike, but they require a helmet. Helmets are hot and they mess up my hair. I really don't know which is the best plan. Riding will get me all over the island, but will limit how much camera gear I can carry. Since we will be on location during the mid-day sun, HDR would be very helpful. That would require a tripod. I'm in a quandary!

I'm in San Francisco for the Weekend. Was wondering if I could meet the group on Angel Island by taking the Ferry from The Ferry Terminal in San Francisco to Angel Island. The Ferry Arrives Angle Island at 10:10am or 12:15pm

They charge a $1.00 for taking a bike. Does anyone know if there are any places on Angel Island to eat?
I see that at 6:30 a sunset ferry leaves for an hour and a half trip around various areas of the bay. The cost is $20. I may do this too. They recommend bringing your own food for this trip. Has anyone done this? It may be a little tricky trying to photograph evening scenes, even with a tripod, on a moving vessel.

    July 15, 2013

    • Al L.

Yes, there is food on the island, down by the ferry landing. Not exactly cheap and definitely not gourmet, but food. But bring your own water. And shooting from a moving deck? Punch up the ISO and open the lens. No problem.

I am looking forward to Angel Island this Saturday! It has been awhile since I went there but do recall a parking issue. Does anybody have a heads-up on where to park that won't break the bank and is good for all day? Thanks!!

I see there are 47 folks signed up. Has anybody talked to the ferry folks about a group rate? Can the ferry handle all of us in addition to the normal folks?

For those that may not want to walk the entire island, would there be an option not to do that?

    June 29, 2013

    • Remy G.

Bob, there is a tram that takes people around the whole island but I dont think you can get on and off. There are also people movers, (cant remember what they are called) and that is a tour...Im sure if you dont want to walk the entire island you can go as far as you want and return the same way...as longa s you make it for the last ferry off the island...:)
