Night shoot at the Sonoma County Fair

A SoCoPhoGro Fave -

We have once again been given permission to shoot the fair!

Please arrive around 630 in order to get your special "vendor/photographer" badge.  You will need this badge to shoot at the fair.  Ray will give some "how to shoot at night" tips before you venture in.

Our shoot time is 645-9pm.

Your badge does not include entrance fees into the fair - for that you are on your own.

You can bring guests but if they are not photographing, please do not count them in the RSVP as there is a limit to how many photographers can particpate.

Bring your tripod. Keep your gear with you at all times.  Please be aware that they frown upon taking photos of children, unless you ask permission.  Yes it is a public place, but in the past fairgoers (a few) have expressed concern of "people" taking their photos without consent".  (not about our group, just in general) We know we can count on this group to be respectful and conscious of that, as we have in the past...

I am sorry to miss this year, my fellow photogs.  I am involved in a work project and cannot get to Santa Rosa in enough time to participate. Therefore, if there is anyone who wants to help Ray organize this meetup, please let me know. You will need to arrive around 615pm to help organize the badges, and stay till 9pm to collect them once the group is done.

Capture some great stuff - KEEP SHOOTING!

I have been looking on line for anything about not taking photo's at county fairs and can find nothing that says it is prohibited. I wondered about this when it was brought up here, now I am really questioning the legality of this issue. For everything I have read there is no reason at all that we should be being singled out. How do we go about finding out why this is happening?

The rules and standards of the Sonoma County Fair regarding shooting with Tripods and long lenses, and their own 'rules' were things that pertained to large groups forming and shooting at the fair. I did not explore or research the rules for shooting at the fair as an individual. I have heard stories in the past of people being asked to return their tripods to the car especially at night, due to safety concerns and / or privacy issues, but that is second hand info. I have asked the fair representative who I've worked with these past 2 years to send me her written policy on shooting at the fair, both for groups and individuals (if it exists) and if I get that I will share it, if you are interested. Thanks...

I appreciate your looking into this and will be interested in what you hear back.

Recently there has been a variety of bans on long lens at event venues. Reasons cited have been anywhere from privacy concerns, image control to security. At the Kentucky Derby this year long lens where banned on a broad recommendation from a security firm after the Boston Bombing. See Link.

    http://petapixel.com/2013/04/23/kentucky-derby-bans-all-interchangeable-lens-cameras-for-security-purposes/

This is a terrible trend from professional and enthusiast alike. There is no reason to single out this piece of equipment. It is understandable to discourage or ban tripods. They can be used as clubs or might be a trip hazard, if a photographer is not vigilant. If this is a policy at the fair ground it needs to be posted at the gate, along with knives and alcohol.

Wow Philip hold on... I am not telling you what gear you have to have. My only intention was to pose a possible solution to a problem. I am a fan of use the gear that you have and are familiar with. A mirror less system is not for everyone. Especially not for a sports photographer but could be great for an event/travel/landscape photographer. On another point I do see be reasoning for this. It is to protect the privacy of those attending the party/event. It can also crack down on surveillance of a place as well. I totally do not agree on the latter.

      August 4, 2013

    • Chuck L.

Erick, there is no expectation of privacy when in a public place. Also, your front door, your front yard, the trees in your yard, your car parked on the street, your dog or cat in your yard, have no expectation of privacy. Anything that can be seen from a public street, sidewalk, bicycle path, hiking trail, etc can be photographed.

Quite a turnout last night. Kudos to the organizers for this, excellent job getting us briefed and shooting. The only negative (which was the same a last year) was that two hours for the shoot with full gear is just not enough time. I could have used one more hour into the night. Regardless, I had fun and got some fun shots as well. Let's do this again!

Tim, i totally agree. Unfortunately, the fair only grants these types of passes in the two hour block. I asked for 3 more than once, even starting later or maybe even on a different day...all which were denied. We are a fair board favorite, however, and they will continue to allow us a day during the fair when we ask for it, so I think that is a great thing. its a tribute to everyone in the group who is respectful and enjoys what they do! thank you!

I liked the opportunity to get some more experience with night photography. Happy with my shots.

I had such a good time, I went back to the fair tonight to take more photos, but this time I took my[masked]mm zoom, to try and take some more candid people shots. After an hour and a half (8 pm), I was approached by security and informed that they didn't allow the big zoom lenses, and I would have to leave. Since I didn't bring another lens, it was time for me to go. No problem, I can understand their policy, but I did get a few good shots in.

Remy, I went back on Friday night with a friend, so it was on my time, and not part of the our meetup. No need to contact the office, as the pass did not apply. Thanks anyhow.

I think this kind of venue maybe harder for men when taking photo's. I look forward to seeing the ones you were able to get.

I found having the second camera really nice. My neck did not feel the same however.

    August 3, 2013

  • Erick

Was a great way to practice my long exposures. Wish I would have gone back to my roots by capturing people in the moment. It is a drawback about having a camera attached to a tripod. Guess it is time to get a second camera :P

I also challenged myself by only using the 50mm f1.4 and focused more on people. I learned a lot and look forward to doing this again. Next time I would like to explore the lights and rides more. Wonderful learning experience, thank you.

    1 · August 3, 2013

  • Phil M.

I had a great time as always. I really enjoy seeing all the great photos that everyone took. This year I challenged myself to use only one lens, my f1.8 50mm prime, and no flash. I took my tripod, but didn't use it.

This was my first time shooting a carnival at night. It was fun seeing all the tripods set up around the rides - a few people asked if we were part of a class. The real highlight is seeing the photos everyone is uploading - very inspiring to me!!!

Excellent event. I enjoyed the opportunity to practice my night photography skills with an interesting group of people.

I really enjoyed it! I was just starting to figure it out when we had to stop, so now I will take my tripod out and continue to practice. I love seeing all the great photos...some very inspiring photographers in this group...and I like the "just have fun" attitude. And yes...very well organized. Thank you!

There is a main entrance on Brookwood Ave, which is also considered a side entrance. That is were we will be meeting.

If I've miss this question somewhere in the conversation, I apologize for the repeat. Will it be necessary to return the badges? I may want to leave before 9 to avoid the mass exodus out of there.

We are asking that the badges be returned to the office or to myself, Ira, or Mindy before you leave.

I have never attended this fair. Will there be fireworks at the end of the day? Last year, I shot the State fair in Sacramento. They did do fireworks, but it's not mentioned any where on their website this year. What advantage is there to having a badge? I didn't have a badge in Sacramento and got some very fun shots. Everything changes so fast.

      Thank-you both for your replies.

No fireworks but there is bound to be at least one fight on the midway & more tattoos than you have ever seen in one place!

Really bummed as work has me unable to attend. Had some shots I have been planning since last year.

Sorry, I have to bow out as a meeting has come up. If I want to shoot on another evening do I need need the "vendor/photographer" badge?

    July 22, 2013

    • Remy G.

John, its tough to tell...some people have tried to do tripods and timed exposure stuff after dark and the police have been on them bout that...so you may want ot call the office - ask for Christy Gentry - she is the person we are getting our permission from...

      July 30, 2013

I have a conflict this evening, so enjoy yourself and take lots of good shots.

Where do we gather exactly? Which entrance - Brookwood (east side) or Grace Pavilion side? Inside or outside?
