Night shoot at the Sonoma County Fair

We have once again been given permission to shoot the fair!

Please arrive around 615 in order to get your special "vendor/photographer" badge.  You will need this badge to shoot at the fair.

Here are some important things to keep in mind for this shoot:

• Before we venture in, Ray will give us some "how to shoot at night" tips if you are new to night time photography.  We all learn something new every time, so don't let 'night shoots' scare you!  This group is known for is shared expertise!

• Our shoot time is 630-9:30 pm.  You can arrive sooner than that to shoot during the day on your own, but meet up with us at 615 outside the side gate (Brookewood Entrance) to get your badge and of course, be a part of the group photo.

• Your badge does not include entrance fees into the fair - so please plan for that.

• You can bring guests to this meet up, but if they are not photographing, please do not count them in the RSVP as there is a limit to how many photo badges we get.

• Bring your tripod!

• Keep your gear with you at all times, and be conscious of other fair goers…70+ photographers take up a lot of space :)

Please be aware that they frown upon taking photos of children, unless you ask permission of the parents.  Yes it is a public place, but in the past fairgoers (a few) have expressed concern of "people" taking their photos without consent".  (Not about our group, just in general) We know we can count on this group to be respectful and conscious of that, as we have in the past...

We encourage you to go to the Sonoma County fair website for information to any questions you have about fair events and policies.

Let's have fun, and capture some great stuff - and of course, have a few corn dogs.

I posted 2 pictures of women at the fair. While in the Hall of Flowers, I put my camera away and started taking family pictures with their cell phones. I was surprised to look behind me to find a line waiting to have their picture taken with their cell phone. The 45 minutes when fast.

One of the real perks of this group is providing/getting feedback from others who went! Also just seeing what others have done! Captain Obvious, I know.

Crap. I'm sick now. I was looking forward to that tutorial on night shots. Can you still offer me some advice? Perhaps if I'm feeling better, I'll go to the fair on Friday and take some shots. I am so BUMMED!! -Rina

    August 3

    • Remy G.

Rina so sorry to hear you are sick. What specific advice or questions do you have about night shooting??

      August 3

    • Just2pekes

Tripod needed, of course but I wanted to know about exposures, lens type etc. my email is [masked]. I'd appreciate it!

      August 3

  • charmaine

What would be a good lens for tonight? I will have my tripod also and I don't feel like hauling to much around.

    August 3

    • Christine B

I am thinking 50mm and my wide angle.

      August 3

    • Paul F.

The 50 might be good for low light tonite (I assume it's f 1.8 or brighter)

      August 3

  • Darris

I'm sure everyone has considered this but it's worth mentioning . . . charge up your batteries and bring extras as long exposures sure eats up battery life!

    August 3

  • SALLY

hi charmaine.... your[masked] will be plenty. leave the 50mm at home...just bring your tripod.

    August 3

  • JD D.

I just changed my RSVP, it is still yes but 1 of my other friends cannot make it so that opens a spot. See you tonight.

    August 3

    • Remy G.

      thanks for doing that!

Change of plans and I can't make it. I hope you all have fun with those spinning lights.

Ray or Remi...which gate? Is there more than one on Brookewood? I am familiar with the main gate on Brookewood.

    1 · August 2

    • Christine B

Bob I am only aware of the main gate on Brookewood. The big one across from the parking area. There is a very small gate up in the field area but that is gravel and for deliveries and usually locked. People go through the main one :) See you there!

      1 · August 2

    • Remy G.

Thanks Christine…yes Bob, the main gate on Brookwood

      August 3

  • Kristen R.

Won't be able to make it tonight. Hope you all have fun! :)

Kristen, we'll see you next time!

      August 3

  • Kaye T.

I am so sorry to cancel so late, but really thought I'd be able to go tonight. Had toe nail surgery a few weeks ago - definitely getting better, but still not walking very far. My very favorite shoot of the year! :(
Hope someone else can take my spot.

    August 3

    • Remy G.

      Kaye we will miss you!

      August 3

  • Paul F.

I'm favoring my[masked]mm and 14 mm for some wide angle long exposures of the rides on tripod, but will bring the 100mm f2.8 macro for some handhelds. So 3 lenses and 2 cameras for me.

Idle curiosity... Why is it that The Powers That Be think they need to give us badges? There is nothing in their published policy that restricts photographers. I for one am getting tired of folks like these attempting to restrict us even though case law is very clear about photography in public venues. Nevertheless I will be a good little robot and take my badge and do what I'm told.

Hi all, newbie here! This sounds like a fun group and a fun event. Any tips for newcomers to night photography?

    July 14

    • Remy G.

If you have a tripod bring it! ;) also, Ray the Organizer will be sharing night shoot tips before we venture in so bring any questions you have and he'll answer them too!

      1 · July 14

    • Kelley L.

Bringing a tripod is the biggest must! After that, a shutter release cable would be recommended, but not really required (this activates the camera without touching it, thus eliminating shots where a little vibration makes everything all wonky blurry). And if you have any time, look up a couple tutorials on night shooting! It's different than daylight shooting, in that the exposure times are typically much longer, but it's really really fun, and you might get addicted!

      July 25

  • Kelley L.

Awesome! I'm really looking forward to do this again this year!

I love to have fun and can't wait to take picture of Sonoma County fair. Also, I moved to beautiful Santa Rosa few months ago from New York. Any tips for a amateur photographer I would appreciate greatly.

    • Remy G.

welcome to the group! At the start of the meet up, Ray will be talking about tips for night photography and shooting in low light conditions. Also, there are members of the group you can tag along with and learn from…its a really friendly group that way. looking forward to meeting you!

      1 · July 17

    • Tom D.

It's been mentioned before and I'll repeat it here... "TRIPOD" and "cable or remote release". Be thinking about low light & time exposures... motion blur (but not from the camera moving).
      Fun stuff!

Hey guys, I am fairly new to night photography, so Ray, I will definitely be there for the tutorial (thank you for offering to do that)! In addition, is there anyone who wouldn't mind if I shadowed them for a bit so as to watch and learn as you go? I don't want to anchor anyone, but perhaps if there is someone with an affinity for teaching and who wouldn't mind sharing some wisdom as they go, I would be ever appreciative!
