Fort Point, Golden Gate Bridge

Last year we started a bit late in the day to really capture the essence of this great spot - and many of you asked to return.

The Fort opens at 10am, and our plan is to shoot there first. It is a semi enclosed structure, so even if the weather is so-so, we can still practice and get some great shots. The views in and around this Fort are fantastic.

Nearby there is the walking entrance to the Golden Gate Bridge, a path that takes you to the southwest side of the bridge, Crissy Field and the brand new construction of the freeway before the marina. Farther still is the Palace of Fine Arts as well.

LOTS of photo ops and could be an amazing day in the city.

Dress in Layers

Pack snacks and water

Bring your off camera flash for practice if you want

** Parking is extremely limited in this area. I will ask Ray to post a map of the most ideal spots - you may want to carpool with others if you can.

Hi all... in my latest article for The Examiner I mention our Photo Group with a link to SOCO site. You can see it here: http://www.examiner.com/article/historic-sites

Definitely a learning experience for me. See other peoples photos, I recognize that if I'd taken some of mine at a different time of day, I would have gotten better results and not have to rely so heavily on HDR for some of mine, or gotten better results with the HDR. Still, I'm very happy. I also saw a fraction of what was there to see and photograph. So many of the pictures that others took were of areas I did not visit, much to my regret. I'll probably go back on my own, via public transit, and spend much more time there, waiting for the light to be more agreeable for specific shots. Again, thank you so much for the opportunity for this experience.

I have to say, so many great photos by everyone! I cannot possibly do justice to them all with individual comments because I'd have a hard time making each comment unique, like the photographers themselves.

Ray & Remy knock it out of the park on this one. Never been there before and can't wait to go back.

This is what a meetup group is supposed to be about. Great fun, fellowship, talent and a chance to come away with more than ya got there with. This group is the best and Ray & Remy are fabulous for helping us all and encouraging our behaviour.

Is it worth it to bring a tripod?

    January 18, 2013

    • Roger B.

Most tripods are light enough...and with a strapped case...walk only as far as you like in any case.

      January 18, 2013

    • Kenneth B.

Always worth it! Leave it in the car if you want but bring it. Best to have it close by than not at all. I use mine a lot of the time unless it is for fast action photos.

Dennis - I sent you an e-mail with my phone number. I hope we connect! If you get this, I'm picking up Robert Porter at the Park N Ride on the east side of the freeway (coming from SR) in Novato off Rowland at 9am. I can pick you up in Petaluma at 8:30 if I hear from you! Otherwise, hope to see you in Novato. I don't have your number...or I would have called.

  • Marlene H.

I live in Sonoma and can pick up three in Petaluma or Novato enroute if interested; or meet at the Park and Drive on Arnold Drive if leaving from this direction. [masked]

Any suggestion where we should park? Somewhere close to the Fort and free (hopefully).

    January 15, 2013

    • Cecilia

There is parking right next to the fort and along the water. If I remember correctly its all free parking.

      January 13, 2013

Hi! This will be my first outing with the group. What can I expect?
Dressed in layers and decent walking shoes I'll be bringing my camera, my tripod, my curiosity, and my enthusiasm. Aside from the parking limitations, I'm wondering if the intent is to drive to other areas in the city or do we park at or near Fort Point and wander on foot? I am looking forward to the map regarding parking spots. I appreciate any feedback you would like to give to a newbie.
