April Birthday Bash!! April birthday peeps and the anniversary of the group!!!

  • Apr 21, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

We are celebrating not only our April birthdays but the 2nd anniversary of the Wanderers! I really hope that you can all make it and help me celebrate this wonderful group of people that have found their way home to The Wanderers!
We will have two versions of the hike...5 miles or the full 8 miles. The short hike peeps will be responsible for getting things set up and the grills going! :)
I will have my special occasion STRAWBERRY Daiquiri jello shots that we can all slurp down in honor of Kathy, Stephanie, Kathie, Colleen, David, Richard, Andy Evans, Andy Smith, Rosemary, Laura, Larry, Marinoly, Christy, Marcelyn, Elaine, Yannick, and any other hike helpers that make this group so spectacular !! I love you guys....you are the best! Yippee!!!!!
LET'S CELEBRATE!!!!!!!!!!!!

This hike is about 8 miles with an elevation gain of 1900ft. BUTTTT.....We also will have the 5 mile version available too!!  Both are Moderate - Strenuous.  Both groups will head out at the same time but the short version people will veer off when we hit the meadow to get down to the picnic area to get the tables set up and the grills going....don't worry we won't pop open the champagne until we all are there!   Both hikes  start off with a great climb to the ridge through the forest....immediate warmup on Pool Ridge! We'll continue to climb our way along the ridge to a grassy meadow with a view when the weather cooperates! The short group will head on down at that point and the others will continue out to Bull Frog Pond.   Both groups of hikers will have an amazing final mile through the old growth redwoods. As you can tell, this hike has a few relentless hills that keep going on up but it is well worth the huffs and the puffs to get up there.  You will travel through MAGNIFICENT red woods forest and drop dead forest scenery.  If you haven't done this hike...this one is a must do. You will find yourself doing this hike time and time again, especially if you stick with The Wanderers!   I promise you, you won't be disappointed!  To enjoy this hike you should be able to comfortably  walk uphill at a steady pace for an extended period and maneuver some steep grades down.

It's that time...time to celebrate April birthdays  PLUS...IT'S THE WANDERER'S 2ND BIRTHDAY!!!!  PLEASE COME HELP US CELEBRATE!!   I'd like to request that when you RSVP you then look for the conversation about food items and add a reply indicating what type of item (salad, entree, dessert...etc) you are going to bring. We also need birthday gifts for our birthday celebrants. Please bring a outdoor oriented wrapped gift if you haven't contributed to the gift bag lately. Something you would like to receive yourself as a gift would be great! I'd like those of you that haven't brought a bottle of wine lately to pitch in and bring a nice bottle of wine. It's hard to see the same (WONDERFUL) people providing the wine time after time when the rest of us are having such a good time drinking it.  We will complete the hike, return to our cars and consolidate into as few cars as possible to drive into the picnic spot.  Bring your State Park passes so we can avoid the $8 fee as we will be driving into the park after the hike to the picnic area!

To get to the trail head:

From downtown Guerneville on Main St. (Highway 116), drive 2.3 miles north on Armstrong Woods Road to the visitor center on the right, just before the state park entrance station.  Park in the large lot on the right by the visitor center.

Please read and be familiar with the guidelines of the group as listed below.  It’s important before you come on a Wanderer hike that you agree and are prepared with the following.

As always:

  • We combine enjoyment of the trail with respect for everyone’s time.   A steady pace and we just keep going!  If you are in the lead you will end up waiting at trail junctions.  If you are in the back you will be asked to do your best to keep up with the group and at waiting points the group may move on as soon as you are within sight.  Our pace averages 2.5mph.  We do get separated from time to time as everyone walks their own pace but please bear in mind that you will need to be able to stay within a reasonable distance from the group.  Make sure this is something you are prepared for and would enjoy
  • Please always check your email the night before just in case there are any necessary adjustments to the hike details.  Cancellations or any adjustments will be posted by 10pm the previous evening.
  • RSVP etiquette must be followed. Only RSVP when you can commit to attend. Once you have RSVP'd if you have an emergency that means you have to cancel please change your RSVP by 5pm the prior day. This will avoid a "no-show" reflecting on your participation history. Over 3 "no-shows" might mean we have to excuse you from the group. We try very hard to respect each other in this group.
  • Give yourself time to find the trail head so that you arrive prior to the scheduled time.  That is the time we head out on the trail.  It would be disappointing to miss having you on the hike due to late arrival.  You will be left behind if you are not ready to head out at the hike start time.
  • Wear comfortable hiking shoes with good rugged soles that are well broken in.
  • Duration: 5 hours
  • Facilities: at trail head and at picnic spot
  • Dogs?: none allowed on the trails
  • Bring plenty of water.  More than one bottle is usually a good idea.
  • Dress in layers.  The hike starts off cool but rapidly warms up.
  • Bring a snack.  Because it's a birthday bash we are not having a lunch stop but you might want something easy to snack on while you walk.
  • Bring your smile and great attitude!  We are ALL about trail enjoyment while respecting everyone’s time!

See you on the trail!

Car pool etiquette- First and foremost....come prepared to drive. Yes.....I know.....a lot of you are trying to car pool because you don't want to or can't drive for whatever reason. I don't want you to be disappointed, so if you can't drive please be aware that you might not be able to join the hike. There is always that risk if you are counting on others to be your transportation. There may be no others wanting to car pool from your selected location or there might be a lot of people and everyone might want to ride. You might arrive late, be in the wrong spot or get stopped by a swarm of your paparazzi...come prepared to drive to the trail head if you want to hike! If we have a gang wanting to ride we determine who gets the rider seats by who has most recently been a driver in the past. This is worked out based by who shows up at the car pool location. We can't guarantee anyone a seat because we never know until that day who will show up. We do our best to work it out and make everyone happy but we need everyone to pitch in and help make it work! General rule of thumb for riders...$5 one hour or less to trailhead $8 over one hour to trailhead Please insist your driver accept the money. It's to cover more than gas money...it's the wear and tear on the vehicle. We like to take care of our drivers! Then PLEASE if possible try to use the two locations below. The more locations we have the less effective we are and it's so much more complicated. Exceptions would be if you are not close to either location.

Car pool locations:

WINDSOR:Safeway lot across from (the now closed) Dennys, depart 8:15

http://goo.gl/maps/6V9K7

SANTA ROSA: Coddingtown Mall parking lot in front of the Coddingtown library to leave by 8

http://goo.gl/maps/dBMKd

PETALUMA-Lucky at the intersection of Lakeville and Caulfield Ln. Park closest to Payran St. suggested leave by 8

VIDEO POSTED on YOUTUBE: The Wanderers’ 2nd Anniversary photo montage may be found at http://youtu.be/UuR-z5cMup4. For the BEST viewing, watch in full screen AND go to the little GEAR icon (lower right) and select 1080p HD. If your playing stops to buffer, then select the next lower quality (720p), etc. Thanks to Ken (so cool) for compiling and producing.

Kathy and I must have been imbibing the same stuff as after a while, everyone was moving in a blur to me too. But seriously folks, a big Thank You to all the unsung heroes who prepared the party area.
I feel like such a cad. Someone had generously placed more beer on top of mine in my ice chest and it wan't till I got home that I found my cheesecake that I was supposed to be sharing. Sorry!
    There'll be a next time.

A special shout out to all the wonderful Wanderers who sacrificed going on the hike to come help set up our picnic area. A big reason the celebration was so fun and seemed so organized and effortless to most of the crowd was your hard work! You emptied cars; moved, brushed off, and covered tables; arranged food and drinks; hung a banner; set out chairs; ran to town for last minute supplies; brought and set up grills; and much more. I know and appreciate all you did and I wanted everyone else to know and appreciate you too!!!! THANK YOU to Lorra, Margaret, CaryLynn, Brigitte, Susette, Trish, Stephanie, Paul, Sammi, Glenn, and Shirley. If you were there and I've left your name off, I am so sorry; everyone was moving in such a blur, I wasn't seeing everyone clearly! :)

Thank you so much to all the wonderful people who put this memorable day together! Maybe we need an after-the-2nd-anniversary bash to celebrate them too!

I agree with Larry who agreed with Brenda who agreed with everyone......some day I hope to grow up like Stan! (or should I say, never grow up like Stan!)

Had a great time! Thanks to all those who put the potluck together, those who all entertained and put a smile on my face, and of course to Leigh w/o her there would not be such a great club "Sonoma County Wanderers!"

    April 23, 2013

  • Trish

Thank you, Leigh, for bringing us all together and for being such a great Leighder! (P.S. Good job on the cake, Stan!). Thank you Kathy for coordinating the set-up! Who made the beautiful sign? Thank you to all of our Event Organizers who help to keep life interesting by offering a choice of Wanderer adventures! It was a great day of entertainment, frivolity and fun!

The core group that planned and set up the Celebration party really do deserve our highest Wanderer Status....@@@ "EXALTED" road party planning specialists extraordinaire! "we love our people"

Finally got to see the slide show and really enjoyed. Personally, I feel like it really brings all of the pictures to life in a way that a book does not and the music really enhances the whole expreiene. Great job ken.

As I left the house this morning, I told my husband, "I never thought being 60 would be this much fun!"

Thank you, Leigh, for everything YOU do to make all of our lives such a joy! And a huge THANK YOU to Stan......who knew? Someone asked how hard it was to get Stan to wear the Elvis wig. FYI: It was amazingly easy! Thank you for everything YOU did to make this day one for the record books: wig, lyrics, costume, 10 things, CD, cake, book, and being so willing to go out on a limb! And a warm hug for everyone who was willing to be part of the show! Now I've got your numbers and my people will call your people.

And to my beloved fellow Wanderers, thank YOU for letting us entertain you. I felt like we were putting on a show for our parents....it really didn't matter what we did, we knew you'd love us in spite of it.

By the way, as the official booking agent for Henry and the Knobettes, I want you to know that we are available for future engagements...and we're cheap!

    5 · April 21, 2013

    • Elaine d.

OK. The phone has not been ringing off the hook. So, we will pay YOU to let Henry and the Knobettes perform at your next party (just as soon as Stan remembers where he left his hair!)

Larry's right: 5 stars aren't enough for this one. I think we need a 10 star rating capability for a celebration such as this. Fun! Fantastic Food! Fun! Hilarity! Fun! Friendliness! Oh, and did I mention fun?

This is like the Academy Awards - you can go thru a long list of people. They are all important. For the camaraderie, creativity, humor, teamwork, and just being good people. Life is good.

A fabulous celebration for Year No. 2! I loved mingling with my hiking "buddies" and sharing the delicious foods and wines. Thanks to those Wanderers who went way beyond and put the show and skits together - a super job well done! (I'm still laughing.) And a special thanks and love to Leigh for creating the Wanderers!

I am dumbfounded, speechless and a little bit in shock! From the effort, creativity and time spent to make this happen, to the clever cake, to the outstanding photo book, to the DVD (which made me cry, by the way) to the lei (which I will wear until it rots) to the generous gifts, to the champagne, to the great entertainment and song, to the loving cards, to the presence of all of you... it was just perfect! Whatever your contribution, I wanted to let you know how special you all made me feel. Today sparkled in a magical way that I don't think can ever be reproduced. I will remember today for the rest of my life! Although the gifts were over the top fantastic, it really was the spirit of camaraderie, positivity, community, joy and caring that you all brought with you today that has me in awe of all of you.
I don't know what I ever did to deserve you and I'm not sure I do...I certainly love and appreciate you and am so glad you found your way home to The Wanderers!
    Thank you!

5 stars squared for this meetup! I truely am thankful for the many friends I have in this group. I love hiking and although usaully with a smaller group, I enjoyed this event and celebrating Leigh's energy and love and this group's 2nd anniversary. Thanks to my carpooling peeps, and the good conversations. We discussed how much we love this group and never have heard any negative people (whinning doesn't count) I stated clicking "good to see you" to many but I need to do it to everyone, so consider that done. Now on to the next hike......see you OTT........

Fabulous day! In this case, what happened at Armstrong does not have to stay there. What a great celebration and what better reason to have it. As great as it all was however, I’m not sure that anything can match the opportunity of being able to have a thick and lustrous head of hair again, even if only for a little while. Enjoy it Sammie, you wear it well. Elaine, thank you for the kind words. You did an amazing job of managing the entertainment. Not an easy thing to do when you have all of those people going every which way. And the Poodle skirts were beyond cool. Now, I’m thinking that I should have worn one just to complete the ensemble. I can see it all now; Vegas, Bellagio, Glitz, Glamour, minimum wage. Richard are you available to be the MC?
