This is a very special event!! YIPPEE!!! But....keep in mind that this is a strenuous 11 mile hike with a 1900 ft climb. It's our classic Oat Hill Mine trek with a (literal) twist at the top. We’ll meet at the bottom of the trail in Calistoga and hike about 5 miles up to Holms Place (1,900-foot elevation gain). But then, instead of heading north-west along the Palisades toward Mount St. Helena, we’ve got permission from the Land Trust of Napa County to head south-east, through their Duff Ranch and Dunn-Wildlake Ranch properties for another 6 miles to Wild Lake, where our cars will be waiting! How? Because, while the hikers are making their way up Oat Hill Mine Trail, the mountain bikers will be starting at Wild Lake and doing the route in the opposite direction! For this hike to work we need hikers and bikers! We need at least a couple of bikers. We can take 12 hikers and need a minimum of 3 bikers to bring the rest of us back down to our cars.
Hikers will meet bikers somewhere near the top and, those willing, will turn over their car keys so the bikers can ferry some of the cars in Calistoga back to Wild Lake, where we’ll all (hikers and bikers) reconnoiter for a potluck and possible dip in the lake. (No skinny dipping!) It’s the best of all worlds: hikers get the uphill, bikers get the downhill, and food and cold beverages will be waiting for us all at the end.
Anyone interested in the biking option should indicate so in the comments below.

Please do not RSVP unless you are sure you can make it. We understand that emergencies come up and you may need to change your RSVP, but lately we have had las many as 1/3 of the "Yes" RSVP-ers drop out the day before the hike! This is unfair to those that would like to join us but maybe put off by the long waiting list, only to find out they could have joined us after-all. If you must change your RSVP, please do so by 5pm the evening before so others can make plans.
From Highway 29/Lincoln Ave in downtown Calistoga, drive one mile northeast on Lincoln Ave (Hwy 29) through town to the Silverado Trail. Make a sharp left onto Lake Street and either park on the street or in the dirt area under the oak trees between Lincoln and Lake Streets. (As a courtesy to the folks who have a home at the base of the trail, try to avoid parking right at the trail head.)
Car pool etiquette- First and foremost....come prepared to drive. Yes.....I know.....a lot of you are trying to car pool because you don't want to or can't drive for what ever reason. I don't want you to be disappointed, so if you can't drive please be aware that you might not be able to join the hike. There is always that risk if you are counting on others to be your transportation. There may be no others wanting to car pool from your selected location or there might be a lot of people and everyone might want to ride. We determine who gets the rider seats by who has most recently been a driver in the past. This is worked out based by who shows up at the car pool location. We can't guarantee anyone a seat because we never know until that day who will show up. We do our best to work it out and make everyone happy but we need everyone to pitch in and help make it work!
Then PLEASE if possible try to use the locations below. The more locations we have the less effective we are and it's so much more complicated. Exceptions would be if you are not close to either location.
Car pool locations:
SANTA ROSA: Coddingtown Mall parking lot in front of the Coddingtown library to leave by 8:15
PETALUMA-Lucky at the intersection of Lakeville and Caulfield Ln. Park closest to Payran St. suggested leave by 8
HEALDSBURG: Big John’s supermarket (1345 Healdsburg Ave) parking lot to leave by 8:15
SAINT HELENA: The NW corner of Deer Park Road and the Silverado Trail. Leave at 8:30.
- Give yourself time to find the trail head so that you arrive prior to the scheduled time. That is the time we head out on the trail. It would be disappointing to miss having you on the hike due to late arrival. If you do arrive late and are familiar with the trail, feel free to head on up after us. Chances are you will come upon us soon!
- Wear comfortable hiking shoes that are well broken in.
- Bring plenty of water. More than one bottle PLEASE!
- Dress in layers. The hike starts off cool but rapidly warms up.
- Bring a snack to carry with you. (We'll stop at the top briefly). You can leave any heavier items to share at Wild Lake in one of the cars left at the trail head in Calistoga...make sure it' s one that's going to get driven back up the hill!
- Be Prepared... There are no restroom facilities at the trailhead!
Please always check your email the night before just in case there are any necessary adjustments.
- Bring your smile and great attitude! Once again....this is not about finishing the hike in record time...it's about enjoying ourselves and the outdoors!
See you on the trail!
