Oat Hill Mine to Wildlake Ranch w/swim and COLD BEER FINISH! :) Hike or Bike!

This is a very special event!!  YIPPEE!!!  But....keep in mind that this is a strenuous 11 mile hike with a 1900 ft climb.  It's our classic Oat Hill Mine trek with a (literal) twist at the top. We’ll meet at the bottom of the trail in Calistoga and hike about 5 miles up to Holms Place (1,900-foot elevation gain). But then, instead of heading north-west along the Palisades toward Mount St. Helena, we’ve got permission from the Land Trust of Napa County to head south-east, through their Duff Ranch and Dunn-Wildlake Ranch properties for another 6 miles to Wild Lake, where our cars will be waiting! How? Because, while the hikers are making their way up Oat Hill Mine Trail, the mountain bikers will be starting at Wild Lake and doing the route in the opposite direction!  For this hike to work we need hikers and bikers!  We need at least a couple of bikers.  We can take 12 hikers and need a minimum of 3 bikers to bring the rest of us back down to our cars.

Hikers will meet bikers somewhere near the top and, those willing, will turn over their car keys so the bikers can ferry some of the cars in Calistoga back to Wild Lake, where we’ll all (hikers and bikers) reconnoiter for a potluck and possible dip in the lake. (No skinny dipping!) It’s the best of all worlds: hikers get the uphill, bikers get the downhill, and food and cold beverages will be waiting for us all at the end.

Anyone interested in the biking option should indicate so in the comments below.

RSVP Etiquette

Please do not RSVP unless you are sure you can make it. We understand that emergencies come up and you may need to change your RSVP, but lately we have had las many as 1/3 of the "Yes" RSVP-ers drop out the day before the hike! This is unfair to those that would like to join us but maybe put off by the long waiting list, only to find out they could have joined us after-all. If you must change your RSVP, please do so by 5pm the evening before so others can make plans.

Directions:

From Highway 29/Lincoln Ave in downtown Calistoga, drive one mile northeast on Lincoln Ave (Hwy 29) through town to the Silverado Trail. Make a sharp left onto Lake Street and either park on the street or in the dirt area under the oak trees between Lincoln and Lake Streets. (As a courtesy to the folks who have a home at the base of the trail, try to avoid parking right at the trail head.)

Carpooling:

Car pool etiquette- First and foremost....come prepared to drive. Yes.....I know.....a lot of you are trying to car pool because you don't want to or can't drive for what ever reason.  I don't want you to be disappointed, so if you can't drive please be aware that you might not be able to join the hike.  There is always that risk if you are counting on others to be your transportation.  There may be no others wanting to car pool from your selected location or there might be a lot of people and everyone might want to ride. We determine who gets the rider seats by who has most recently been a driver in the past. This is worked out based by who shows up at the car pool location. We can't guarantee anyone a seat because we never know until that day who will show up.  We do our best to work it out and make everyone happy but we need everyone to pitch in and help make it work!

Then PLEASE if possible try to use the locations below. The more locations we have the less effective we are and it's so much more complicated. Exceptions would be if you are not close to either location.

Car pool locations:

SANTA ROSA: Coddingtown Mall parking lot in front of the Coddingtown library to leave by 8:15

http://goo.gl/maps/dBMKd

PETALUMA-Lucky at the intersection of Lakeville and Caulfield Ln. Park closest to Payran St. suggested leave by 8

http://goo.gl/maps/xA0qm

HEALDSBURG: Big John’s supermarket (1345 Healdsburg Ave) parking lot to leave by 8:15

http://goo.gl/maps/m56WV

SAINT HELENA: The NW corner of Deer Park Road and the Silverado Trail. Leave at 8:30.

http://goo.gl/maps/CMz26

As always:

  • Give yourself time to find the trail head so that you arrive prior to the scheduled time.  That is the time we head out on the trail.  It would be disappointing to miss having you on the hike due to late arrival. If you do arrive late and are familiar with the trail, feel free to head on up after us.  Chances are you will come upon us soon!
  • Wear comfortable hiking shoes that are well broken in.
  • Bring plenty of water.  More than one bottle PLEASE!
  • Dress in layers.  The hike starts off cool but rapidly warms up.
  • Bring a snack to carry with you. (We'll stop at the top briefly). You can leave any heavier items to share at Wild Lake in one of the cars left at the trail head in Calistoga...make sure it' s one that's going to get driven back up the hill!
  • Be Prepared... There are no restroom facilities at the trailhead
Please always check your email the night before just in case there are any necessary adjustments.
  • Bring your smile and great attitude! Once again....this is not about finishing the hike in record time...it's about enjoying ourselves and the outdoors!

See you on the trail!

This was an awesome hike filled with wildflowers in full bloom, blue-tailed skinks and gentle breezes throughout unlike the wind tonight which has woken me up! Thank you all, hikers and bikers for sharing in the adventure and making it so much fun. Swimming at the lake and enjoying cold beer in good company couldn't have been a more welcome end to a magical day on mother earth! Thank you!!

    Where was the carpool????In Coddingtown?

    April 22, 2013

    • Elaine d.

Ohh, I'm so sorry you missed the hike! There were two folks at Coddingtown but they didn't find each other, so they drove over sperately. It really helps everyone if folks interested in carpooling makes themselves known in the conversations related to that carpool, that way folks know who to look for! Hope to see you next time!

Awesome hike, great companions, and fantastic finish!! Thank you Elaine for making this happen, thank you fat tire brigade for allowing us to not have to hike back, and thanks to all of you who provided cold beer and yummy snacks. Now that I'm dialed in I will bring wine and food to share on future excursions. Lauren, post me when you want to do a hike, spa day, or come down to soak in the hot tub.

I love it when a plan comes together! We made it to the lake BEFORE the bikers! And the cold BEER was waiting for us AND really COLD. And the lake was the PERFECT temperture for a refreshing dip. And the wildfowers were still in bloom. And we didn't get lost! Thanks to all of you (new friends and old friends and new friends from the Annadel Mountain Bike Meet-up Group) for joining us on this unque adventure...... I think we've got a winner in this new hike & bike expedition! And thank YOU Dustin for patiently taking and posting the photos.....

    Hi Elaine,
I know it is very late but I hurt my knee skiing today and after much thought I think I better give it a day off...please count me out..:(

Hi Everyone, We need AT LEAST one of you to be willing to leave your car keys for one of the bikers to bring your car up to WildLake Ranch. And with 6 bikers, up to 5 additional cars can be brought up to Wildlake...the more the better.

If you're willing, please put your keys in an envelope and/or somehow label them so the biker knows which car they go to. The keys will be left on our p-up truck which will be left at the bottom of Oat Hill Mine. If your car doesn't make it to Wildlake your keys will and there will be folks coming down the hill with empty seats in their car to get you back to your car in Calistoga.

If you have something to share for the post-hike gathering that needs to be kept cool, please bring a cooler and some ice and make sure it ends up in our pick-up truck at the bottom of Oat Hill Mine.

We will be stopping for lunch along the trail....so bring your lunch with you and bring plenty of water.

    See you tomorrow!

What time do you think this adventure will be over?

    April 21, 2013

    • Elaine d.

I'm thinking its a 4 - 5 hour hike...so we should be done hiking at 2....but I can't be sure since we haven't actually done this one before.....Plus, because of the car shuttle situation we need to be able to be a little flexible on the finish time......Hope it can still work for you!

      April 11, 2013

Biking sounds like fun, but I don't have a mtn. bike.

    April 5, 2013

    • Elaine d.

Hi Patrick. That would be terrific. I just want to make sure you are an experienced mountain biker or have ridden down Oat Hill Mine Trail from the top before. It's a pretty rocky, rugged. technical trail, especially at the top...it may not the best place to ride if you need to borrow someone else's mountain bike.

      April 6, 2013

    • patrick k.

Yes, I've hiked down it a few times. Very rough but manageable.

      April 11, 2013

  • Elaine d.

Anyone, let me know if you are coming north on Hwy 29 or the Silverado Trail (through St. Helena) in order to get to Calistoga. I can meet you in St. Helena in the morning and take you up to Calistoga so your car will be waiting in St. Helena at the end of the hike. It'll be a good thing.
