A Marvelous Night for a Moon Dance at Wildlake Ranch - 6 miles - Moderate

According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, July's full moon is known as the "Full Buck Moon" because the bucks start to grow their new antlers this month. In any case, this should be a marvelous night to visit the top of Old Baldy at the Land Trust's Wildlake Ranch. So let's do it! We will depart from the corner of Deer Park Road and the Silverado Trail at 5:00 pm and convoy up to Wildlake Ranch, where we'll park at Deer Camp (next to Wild Lake.) From there it will be about a three mile hike UP to the fabulous picnic tables at Flat Top and some of the best views in the Napa Valley. (Old Baldy is nearby.)

Bring your dinner and/or something to share. We'll head back the same way we came, but in the moonlight. Because of the tree cover, you will need a head lamp for the last mile and a half. We'll be on a well-maintained fire road the whole way, but it's a steady climb up to get to Baldy and we will maintain the standard Wanderer's brisk pace both coming and going.

Dress in layers (it might be chilly coming back) and don't forget your cameras.  I'm thinking the lake in moonlight will be beautiful.

RSVP Etiquette

Please do not RSVP unless you are sure you can make it. We understand that emergencies come up and you may need to change your RSVP, but lately we have had as many as 1/3 of the "Yes" RSVP-ers drop out the day before the hike! This is unfair to those that would like to join us but may be put off by the long waiting list, only to find out they could have joined us after-all. If you must change your RSVP, please do so by 5pm the evening before so others can make plans.

For the time being I can only take 5 people on this hike.  But if I get permission from the Land Trust to take more I can open it up.  So please, put yourself on the waiting list if the hike is full.

Carpooling:

Car pool etiquette- First and foremost....come prepared to drive. Yes.....I know.....a lot of you are trying to car pool because you don't want to or can't drive for what ever reason.  I don't want you to be disappointed, so if you can't drive please be aware that you might not be able to join the hike.  There is always that risk if you are counting on others to be your transportation.  There may be no others wanting to car pool from your selected location or there might be a lot of people and everyone might want to ride. We determine who gets the rider seats by who has most recently been a driver in the past. This is worked out based by who shows up at the car pool location. We can't guarantee anyone a seat because we never know until that day who will show up.  We do our best to work it out and make everyone happy but we need everyone to pitch in and help make it work!

Then PLEASE if possible try to use the locations below. The more locations we have the less effective we are and it's so much more complicated. Exceptions would be if you are not close to either location.

Car pool locations:

SANTA ROSA: Caltrans Park & Ride lot adjacent to the Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial building. We gather by the Airporter pick up point to leave by 4:00
http://goo.gl/maps/yYNCm

PETALUMA-Lucky at the intersection of Lakeville and Caulfield Ln. Park closest to Payran St. suggested leave by 4:00 pm

http://goo.gl/maps/xA0qm

HEALDSBURG: Big John’s supermarket (1345 Healdsburg Ave) parking lot to leave by 3:45

http://goo.gl/maps/m56WV

As always:

  • Give yourself time to find the trail head so that you arrive prior to the scheduled time.  That is the time we head out on the trail.  It would be disappointing to miss having you on the hike due to late arrival. If you do arrive late and are familiar with the trail, feel free to head on up after us.  Chances are you will come upon us soon!
  • Wear comfortable hiking shoes that are well broken in.
  • Bring plenty of water.  More than one bottle PLEASE!
  • Dress in layers.  It'll probably be pretty warm as we head out but could get cool rapidly once the sun goes down.
  • Bring dinner! There's a lovely spot on top of Old Baldy to enjoy a meal while we wait for the stars to align.....
  • Please always check your email the night before just in case there are any necessary adjustments.
  • Bring your smile and great attitude! Once again....this is not about finishing the hike in record time...it's about enjoying ourselves and the outdoors!
  • DON'T FORGET YOUR SWIMSUIT & BEACH TOWEL.

See you on the trail!

Yes, WHERE are the photos???!!! The sunset from the lowlands in San Rafael was out of this world beautiful so I'm curious what it looked like from on high? : )

I am so sad to have to change my RSVP to No! ;(

During last nights Full Moon hike, I came down with something and I don't want to spread my cooties.

Re: food - I will stop at Whole Foods and see what I can bring - perhaps a pasta salad? or a chicken salad?

    July 22, 2013

    • Marie-Noelle

Hi Michele, these are great ideas... I am bringing a pesto pasta salad with feta, olives and tomatoes so if you don't bring exactly the same thing we should be fine :)

      July 22, 2013

Hello! I was going with Marcia and Trish in their carpool BUT I have too much work to do to leave by 2pm. So, I am joining the 4pm carpool. Can anyone pick me up at the Calistoga Road and Highway 23 Safeway on your way over Calistoga Road? It's so much closer to my home than the Cal Trans Park and Ride by the Veterans Bldg. If not, I will be at the Park & Ride by 4pm. My cell is[masked] just in case.

I did the hike last night and it was GORGEOUS! It will be amazing tonight!

Looks like we are going to have a really nice picnic! I can't wait to hear what the rest of the group is bringing :) If I recall, we need to bring our trash down from the top because there are no garbage cans by the picnic tables. One way to minimize our trash would be to bring our own plate/cup/utensils if possible. Anybody bringing paper plates/cups/utensils just in case? I'll bring garbage bags...

    July 22, 2013

    • Shawna

Marie-Noelle, Thanks for the suggestion that we each bring our own plate/cup, etc. It's a good idea. :)

      July 22, 2013

    • Trish

Marie-Noelle- Thank you for planning ahead....I'm bringing chicken papaya spring rolls with peanut sauce and some red wine.....I'll also bring my own utensils...good suggestion....

One more thing to tell those who are new to this hike: The drive takes another 10 or 15 minutes from Silverado Trail, so please plan to pay drivers accordingly for gas and wear and tear on cars. For those who drive -- your car may get a bit dusty. :)

    July 21, 2013

  • Marie-Noelle

Hello moondancers! Just checking who is interested in a bloody mary at our potluck picnic tomorrow. So far I've got Marcia, Brenda and Marcelyn... Elaine gets a raincheck :) You can just "like" the "bm" post below if you would like me to bring some for you. What are you all bringing to the potluck?

    July 21, 2013

    • Anne-Christina

My potluck offering is beginning to sound really mundane..I may have to spike with chocolate or booze.

      July 21, 2013

    • Shawna

I'll bring dolmas and olives. And some chocolate, too.

      July 21, 2013

  • Trish

Whoo HOO! I'll be at the Santa Rosa carpool!

    July 10, 2013

    • Trish

Update: I'll be joining the SR carpool from Marcia's house......

      July 21, 2013

    • Shawna

Just for the sake of keeping track... It looks like Brenda, Shawna, Gary, and Sara at the Cal Trans carpool. Anyone else?

      July 21, 2013

  • Shawna

NOTE TO ALL who haven't done this hike before: You may want to bring at least one walking stick for coming back down. The road is steep, and it's easy to lose ones footing on loose gravel in the dark.

    July 21, 2013

  • Barbara

Kathy- thanks for getting back to me.

I want to go on the hike- they say there is space but I do not know how to change from wait list to yes.
Keep me posted if there is a spot for me
    Thanks

    July 20, 2013

    • Kathy F

Barbara - this hike is full with a LOOOONNNNG wait list. The Land Trust regulates group size, so we can't change that. The good news (for you) is that you're first on the list. But as of now, there are no spaces available. If someone drops out, you will be automatically notified that you are confirmed. Otherwise, you'll need to wait till this is offered again.

      July 20, 2013

  • Anne-Christina

Ah yes..potluck! I hope no one objects to a tasty quinoa salad..

    July 20, 2013

  • Kathy F

Elaine - we will have a great time... AND... you will be sorely missed and we will be thinking of you and yours under the same moon. I do want to do this one again when you are able to be there.

    July 20, 2013

I'll bring a pesto salad with feta and olives to share at the potluck picnic.
