Sonoma Mtn. Summit at Jack London (Moderate)

  • Oct 24, 2013 · 9:15 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

This is a special hike that will climb 1800 feet over 4 miles with a total mileage of 8 miles.

This trail will take us to the summit of Sonoma Mountain via access roads, single track trails and fire roads so the walking is pleasant and non-technical.  The trail leads through forests with redwoods, big-leaf maple, black oak, buckeye and madrone!  It's a great hike and terrific work out in a beautiful spot.  I plan to, once again, huff and puff my way up the trail while thoroughly enjoying myself.   I hope that you can join me and experience Jack London State Park while we still are able to.  For this hike bring a picnic lunch and a small towel to sit on.  We stop at the top under a tree and sit on the long dry grass.  You will be glad you brought something to sit on.

A map of the park is available at:

http://www.jacklondonpark.com/JackLondon_SHP%20park%20map.pdf

A picture and short trail description is available at:

http://www.summitpost.org/sonoma-mountain/284663

As always:

Wear comfortable hiking shoes that are well broken in.

Bring plenty of water.  More than one bottle is usually a good idea.

Dress in layers.  The hike starts off cool but rapidly warms up.

Bring a lunch.  We have a break at a scenic spot up at the top.

Please always check your email the night before just in case there are any necessary adjustments.

Always try to car-pool if you can.  If there is a noted car pool that is full or doesn’t work for you it would be wonderful if posted your own on the hike’s comments spot.  And car poolers if you are riding with someone other than your leader please chip in for gas and the use of their car.

Bring your smile and great attitude! Once again....this is not about finishing the hike in record time...it's about enjoying ourselves and the outdoors!

See you on the trail!

There is a park fee of $10

FOR car pools ...we have a change. Please document your car pool info in your RSVP comments NOT the general comments below. That will eliminate many msgs to the hike attendees. Car pool etiquette- Come prepared to drive, be aware that there may be no others wanting to car pool from your selected location or there might be a lot of people and everyone might want to ride. We determine who gets the rider seats by who has most recently been a driver in the past. This is worked out based by who shows up at the car pool location. We can't guarantee anyone a seat because we never know until that day who will show up.  We do our best to work it out and make everyone happy but we need everyone to pitch in and help make it work!

Then PLEASE if possible try to use the two locations below. The more locations we have the less effective we are and it's so much more complicated. Exceptions would be if you are not close to either location.

Petaluma-Lucky at the intersection of Lakeville and Caulfield Ln. Park closest to Payran St. leave at 8:30

Santa Rosa-Car pool will leave at 8:50 at Caltrans Park & Ride lot adjacent to the Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial building. We gather by the Airporter pick up point.

Hope to see you on the trail!

I love this hike! Steep, wonderful views, and so many different environments: redwood forests, douglas fir, grape vinyards, grassy hills, oaks, ....

Great workout, even if I was a little pokey. It's going to take a bit of getting in shape to keep up with the pack. However, I enjoyed it a lot, the company, the view, the park- thanks so much!

Now that is the way I like a hike. Cool comfortable temperatures, some fall color, lot's of bright green undergrowth in the trees and burnished gold grass up at the top....and of course don't let me forget the terrific company! A big welcome to Sharon, Masali and Dorje who are relatively new to the group!
    Patrick...we missed you!

Sorry Leigh for the last minute cancellation but Ellen injured her broken arm and is in some pain. Taking her to the doctors this morning. Nothing serious fortunately.

8 mile hikes are feeling too short these days. :-)
The fog blanket was so beautiful from up on top of the mountain. What a treat!
Thanks Lee and everybody else. We sure have fun, don't we?!

Hi Masali...the car pool info is described above ( you will find it on all the longer hikes). You then comment in the comment section which location you will be at. If neither designated spot works for you then you can add a new one you just would pick a place and time and write it in the comment section as well! See you soon!
