Annadel: Warren Richardson Trail (and more) Loop - 6.5-7miles miles (Moderate)

  • Oct 25, 2013 · 9:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

This was the first hike I ever did in Annadel State Park, and I always love going back to it.

We are meeting inside the park for this one; there is an $8 per car parking fee, but it's free with a state OR a Sonoma County parks pass.

We will only take a short break as we'll be done by lunch-time, so you'll have the afternoon free to do other things.

We'll start at the parking lot inside the park on Warren Richardson Trail, winding our way up and then down to the lake. Warren Richardson is a wide fire road that has some erosion in spots but is in pretty good shape.  We'll head around the south side of Lake Ilsanjo, passing an outhouse on the way. We'll loop around and down on the Rough Go and Live Oak trails, then back up on North Burma, finishing down on Steve's S Trail back to the parking lot.  We'll pass from shade to sun to shade, through thick forest, oak woodlands, and a bit of open meadow.  It's a bit of a roller coaster hike, but none of the hills (up or down) are really steep.

Directions:

From Highway 12 and Calistoga Road on the northwest end of Sonoma Valley drive 1.1 miles southeast on Highway 12 (Sonoma Highway) to Los Alamos Road.  Turn right and drive .2 miles to Melita Road.  Turn right and immediately veer left onto Montgomery Drive.  Drive a half mile to Channel Drive.  Turn left and keep going, past the Cobblestone Trail parking, past the park entrance, all the way to the big parking lot at the end.  There is a $7 or $8 per car parking fee.

Please read and be familiar with the guidelines of the group as listed below.  It’s important before you come on a Wanderer hike that you agree and are prepared with the following.

As always:

We combine enjoyment of the trail with respect for everyone’s time.   A steady pace and we just keep going!  If you are in the lead you will end up waiting at trail junctions.  If you are in the back you will be asked to do your best to keep up with the group and at waiting points the group may move on as soon as you are within sight.  Our pace averages 2.5mph.  We do get separated from time to time as everyone walks their own pace but please bear in mind that you will need to be able to stay within a reasonable distance from the group.  If this doesn’t work for you, we can provide you with a map so you can take pleasure in the trail at your own pace.  Make sure this is something you are prepared for and would enjoy.  Feel free to print out the map for your own use.

Please always check your email the night before just in case there are any necessary adjustments.  Cancellations or any adjustments will be posted by 10pm the previous evening.

Give yourself time to find the trail head so that you arrive prior to the scheduled time.  That is the time we head out on the trail.  It would be disappointing to miss having you on the hike due to late arrival.  You will be left behind if you are not ready to head out at the hike start time.

Wear comfortable hiking shoes with good rugged soles that are well broken in.

Duration: 2.5-3 hours

Facilities: at the trail head

Dogs?: none allowed in State Parks

Bring plenty of water.  More than one bottle is usually a good idea.

Dress in layers.  The hike starts off cool but rapidly warms up.

Bring a snack for our short break.

Bring your smile and great attitude!  We are ALL about trail enjoyment while respecting everyone’s time!

See you on the trail!

Just realized the So Co Park Pass works as well, so I'll drive in too! I'll stop at the dirt parking lot and pickup anyone in need of a ride in.
