EASTER EGG HUNT & BIRTHDAY BASH!!!! Ramble at Armstrong Woods! (Moderate)

It's an Easter celebration and birthday bash and we need all the January, February, March and APRIL birthday gang!  This is an party event for those of you that have hiked with us at least 10 times!  Sorry we just don't have room for everyone.  We will have another one in the Spring so if you couldn't come to this one...do your best to get some hikes on your record so you can come to the next one!

As always...first we MUST hike...so first about the hike!  This hike is about 9 miles with an elevation gain of 1900ft. We've done most of this many times at Armstrong Woods. Both as an evening and a day hike doing a variation of this on East Ridge and Pool Ridge trails.  This time we will be seeing the total complete loop at Armstrong Woods.   We start off with a great climb to the ridge through the forest....immediate warmup on East Ridge! We'll continue to climb our way along the ridge to a grassy meadow with a view when the weather cooperates! We then will continue out to Bull Frog Pond campground where we will take a short 10 minute break.  We will make our way back on the road for a bit to catch Pool Ridge trail for the remainder of the way back down throught the park.  We have an amazing final mile through the old growth redwoods. As you can tell, this hike has a few relentless hills that keep going on up but it is well worth the huffs and the puffs to get up there.  You will travel through MAGNIFICENT red woods forest and drop dead forest scenery.  If you haven't done this hike...this one is a must do. You will find yourself doing this hike time and time again, especially if you stick with The Wanderers!   I promise you, you won't be disappointed!  To enjoy this hike you should be able to comfortably  walk uphill at a steady pace for an extended period and maneuver some steep grades down.

NOW!!!  About the BIRTHDAY BASH!!  Kathie Barclay has been kind enough to invite us to her house.  Those of you lucky enough to get on the RSVP list will be given the directions at the hike.  You will need to be on the set up crew (5 people), a chef (everyone not setting up or cleaning!), or a member of the clean up (5 people) crew.  Indicate below which team you are joining.  You also need to bring a WRAPPED gift (unless you brought a birthday gift in December-most of you just brought Christmas gifts-those DON'T count) and a bottle of wine or whatever you want to drink.  We are hoping for a performance from the Wandering Ukes and anyone else that would like to perform!

To get to the trail head:

From downtown Guerneville on Main St. (Highway 116), drive 2.3 miles north on Armstrong Woods Road to the visitor center on the right, just before the state park entrance station.  Park in the large lot on the right by the visitor center.

As always:

Wear comfortable hiking shoes

Bring water and apply sunscreen

Wear layers.  This hike will start off cool but you will warm up quickly!

This hike doesn't include a lunch stop due to the birthday bash  Though we will stop out at Bull Frog Campground for a few minutes for a snack.

Have fun!

I have grown to admire, respect, and love so many of my Wanderer friends. My life has been made richer, even as my back account declines from spending "too" much time on the trail. This group gives me hope. And in it, I am never alone.

Thank you to each of your for welcoming me into your community and your hearts. I truly have been exalted: placed at a higher or powerful level. I do feel higher and more powerful. And it was all of you, not just these legs, that placed me here.

I forgot to give my 100th hike speach. I know it's not necessary to give a speech, but I woke up in the middle of the night and just had to write this down. So here it is... in two parts because it's too long for one message:

When I joined the Wanderer's, I thought I was joining a hiking group: a group of people who have in common a love for walking in nature. What I didn't realize is that I was stepping into a community. A community in which I would fine oppotunities to challenge myself physically and enjoy myself thoroughly. But more than that, a community in which I would be able to share myself over and over again and be gifted with experiencing a wide variety of individuals willing to share so much of themselves with me. I would be supported and receive opportunities to provide support. And oh my goodness, would I laugh!

Ok...the time has come to make sure you are READY for tomorrow...you will need your pot luck item, bottle of wine or other beverage, wrapped birthday gift ($15 outdoor oriented item) and a snack for you to have on the trail. Kathie will have directions for you when you arrive at the hike. You also will need your high spirits, laughter and enough energy left over to search for your easter egg.
We expect to be finished the hike around 1:30pm and at Kathie's by 2. We will have cocktails, appetizers and games, followed by our feast around 3-to be finished around 4 so the 5 people in the clean up crew (Elaine, Kathy, John, and Steve)can go at it!!...OOPS just noticed a few members of the clean up crew cancelled....anyone up for helping with cleanup? MAKE sure to have snacks in your pocket for the hike so you won't starve in the meantime!

Sorry I need to cancel. Too much going on in the rest of life - including a doctor's appointment today to remove a tick from yesterday's hike, followed by a trip to take it to public health for evaluation for Lyme bacteria. Won't know results until next Friday. The bite was very dark red and inflamed so being extra careful after all our discussions and fears about Lyme on the hike! How can such a tiny critter cause so much grief?! Will miss being at the party and wish all of you a wonderful celebration!
