Olompali State Park to Mt Burdell by Switchbacks! (10 mi. Moderate+/Strenuous)

The name "olompali" comes from the Miwok language and may be translated as "southern village" or "southern people." The Coast Miwok inhabited at least one site within the park from as early as 6,000 BC until the early 1850's.

We'll begin with a steep walk up the Miwok Trail to the junction with Upper Mt. Burdell Trail, then zigzag our way to an elevation of 1558' on Burdell Mountain Ridge Fire Road. On our way down, we'll forgo the steep Miwok Trail, for a gentler descent on Lower Mt. Burdell Trail.

Please be aware that there's an $8.00 per car state parks fee to use the park. If your driver provides a parking pass, please pitch in your fair share of the $8 entrance fee.

Here's a link to the trail map: http://www.google.com/search?q=marin+county+.+org+olompali+trail+map&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&client=safari

Car pool locations:

NoteI'm padding these times, in case of traffic congestion between Petaluma and Novato. This may be an overkill, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. We'll plan to form our circle quickly and start the hike promptly at 9:15.

Coddingtown Library parking lot, suggested departure at 8:30 am.

Petaluma - Lucky at the intersection of Lakeville and Caulfield Ln. Park closest to Payran St., suggested departure at 8:45 am.

If your driver or another passenger provides a parking pass, please reimburse your share of the $8 fee.

General room of thumb...$5 one hour or less to trailhead, $8 over one hour to trailhead Please insist your driver accept the money. It's to cover more than gas: it's also for the wear and tear on the vehicle, and the driver's effort. We like to take care of our drivers!

Please read and be familiar with the guidelines of the group as listed below. It’s important before you come on a Wanderer hike that you agree and are prepared.

• Hike duration estimates, based on 2.5 mph average (incl. breaks).

• Facilities: At the trailhead

• Dogs?:  Not allowed on State Parks trails

• Bring snacks in an accessible pocket, to eat on the trail, if you think you may need nutrition before the lunch break. Pack a lunch, too, as we will stop to eat together.

• Bring plenty of water. More than one bottle is usually a good idea.

• Dress in layers, as the weather on our coastline can change rapidly.

• Wear comfortable, sturdy footwear.

We combine enjoyment of the trail with respect for everyone’s time. We keep a steady pace, and we just keep going!  If you are in the lead, you will end up waiting at trail junctions. If you are in the back, you will be asked to do your best to keep up with the group. At waiting points the group may move on just as soon as you are within sight. Our pace averages 2.5 mph. We do get separated from time to time, as everyone walks their own pace, but please bear in mind that you will need to be able to stay within a reasonable distance from the group. Make sure this is something you are prepared for and will enjoy.

Please always check your email the night before just in case there are any necessary adjustments.  Cancellations are usually posted by 10pm the previous evening.

Please don’t RSVP unless you sincerely plan to attend. If you RSVP, we expect you to be there, or to change your RSVP by 5:00 PM the prior evening.

We are all about trail enjoyment, while respecting everyone’s time. Give yourself time to find the trailhead, as the posted time is when we head out on the trail. It would be disappointing to miss the hike due to late arrival. Those who are not ready to head out at the hike start time may be left behind.

Please bring your smile and a positive attitude.

See you on the trail!
