This 9 mile hike with a 1300 foot altitude gain. I This scenic loop uses theMiwok and Bobcat trails and proceeds on to Wolf Ridge and on up to the top of the world at Hill 88 with the world at your feet. You circle Gerbode Valley from Rodeo beach and enjoy360-degree views that take in San Francisco, the Pacific coastline, Tennesse Valley, Mt. Tam and the Richmond Bridge! This trail is also on a fairly wide dirt path that is smooth walking for the first 4-5 miles and then you are on a trail that is rougher going. There are stairs and some steep descents. You will see various WWII military bunkers and installations. This hike is a "must do" if you are physically able to do a moderate to strenuous hike!
From Hwy. 101 southbound, just south of the Waldo tunnel, take the Sausalito Exit, which is also signed for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Go right after the exit at the junction and proceed .25 to Bunker Rd. Turn left and after .1 mile you reach a one-direction-only tunnel where traffic is controlled by a stop light. After emerging from the .5 mile tunnel, follow the signs to Rodeo Beach. The trail head is at the very end of the parking lot.
Please make sure to eat something prior to the hike. We will eat out lunch at the top of Hill 88 which is about 3 miles from the end of the hike..well past the half way point.
A great trail description of a portion of the hike with pictures can be found at:
Give yourself time to find the trailhead so that you arrive prior to the scheduled time. That is the time we head out on the trail. It would be disappointing to miss having you on the hike due to late arrival.
Wear comfortable hiking shoes that are well broken in.
Dogs are not allowed by the park
We go rain or shine (unless the weather causes unsafe conditions)
Bring plenty of water. More than one bottle is usually a good idea.
Dress in layers. The hike starts off cool but rapidly warms up.
There are restrooms at the trail head.
Please always check your email the night before just in case there are any necessary adjustments.
Always try to car-pool if you can. If there is a noted car-pool that is full or doesn’t work for you it would be wonderful if posted your own on the hike’s comments spot. And car-poolers if you are riding with someone other than your leader please chip in for gas and the use of their car.
