Road trip dreaming and planning session

This is a meeting to discuss future plans and ideas.  This is the list of past trips I have done with the group in the last 3 years:

• Big Basin Camping Trip 3 days

• Kern River and Sequoia National Park Hiking and Kayaking 3 days

• Prairie Creek Camping Trip-3 days

• Yosemite (3 times) from 3-5 days

• Tahoe Fallen Leaf Camping trip and Desolation Wilderness. 4 days

• Lassen National Park (2 times) 4 days

• Salt Point State Park Camping trip 3 days

• Mendocino Retreat 3 days

• Big Sur Camping trip 3 days

• Pinnacles National Park- (3 times) 2 days

• Southwest Grand Circle (excluding the Grand Canyon) 7 days

• Ecuador and the Amazon Basin-8 days

• Peru and Machu Picchu 8 days

• England and the Cotswolds-10 days

• Hawaii Adventure-5 days

• Zion National Park and The Narrow backpacking trip 4 days

• Death Valley 5 days  **  this is a hiking trip that I did not personally attend

Just because we have done all of the above, that doesn't mean that I don't plan to do it again. I'm just sharing the above list so that you know what my background is and what I am familiar with.

Fresh and new ideas are what I am looking for from all of you!!!  I will need copies (please no originals..unless you don't need them back) of any helpful materials.  The more information you provide for me....the better your chance will be that your idea will be chosen for a future trip.

These are the key ingredients for what I am looking for future trips

-At least 3 days of stellar hiking.  Hikes should be between 8-14 miles if possible and easy to get to from a basecamp or accommodation.

-Location can accommodate a group.  A combo of types of accommodation are always a plus because some members don't care for camping and others LOVE to camp

-Beautiful and unique scenery

-an available alternate physical activity is always fun (boating, swimming, fishing etc...)

Don't have any ideas or suggestions??  That's ok...just come and get excited about what is in our future!

As you know....the results are as follows:
The most votes were received for the following for[masked] and 16
    Hawaii
    Costa Rica
    Glacier National Park
    British Columbia
    Ruby Lakes
    The Lakes District
    Joshua Tree
    Big Sur
    Yosemite
    Colorado Rocky Mountains
    Eel River
I am actively starting to work on Glacier, Costa Rica, The Lakes District and Colorado to get us started....BUT Costa Rica was probably one of the trips with the MOST votes but I am not having good luck with finding an area with multiple days of excellent hiking in the range of 8-15 miles per day....Some of you said you could help and I'm going to need your help to make that trip work. If any of you know of an area and can name the hikes that would be wonderful!

I am so excited that I was able to vote on future adventures! How lucky is that?!

So sorry to miss this meeting. Here are three ideas:

    1) The John Muir Way in Scotland! Johnnie Muir was born in Scotland and moved to the US when he was 11. There is now a coast to coast route honoring him in his native land.
    http://www.sfgate.com/default/article/John-Muir-Way-honors-conservationist-in-native-5613991.php

    2) Kennedy Meadows - Backpacking or day hikes in the Emigrant Wilderness. Kennedy Meadows is a mountain "resort" with cabins for as low as $100 per night. It is about 3.5 hours from Sonoma County in the hills above Pinecrest. I have maps.

    3) To the lake and back! Day hikes in the Trinity Alps.

Rosemary....Trinity Alps got quite a few votes...it wasn't one with the most but enough that we should do it!

Death in a friends family. Wont be able to make it tonite. My suggestions is that trips that are fairly local and cheap for those of us that dont have the time or money for exotic trips. A great place to go is the Mt Shasta area. Beautiful scenery, waterfalls, lakes, swimming etc. I camped at a place called Railroad Park in Dunsmuir. Real nice campgrounds with showers and flush toilets and its attached to a little resort with converted railroad cars that are kind of like a B&B for those who prefer the option. Their is also a restaurant and bar on the premises.
Their are a number of guidebooks with many hike options from short easy ones to strenuous. A fairly quick (within an hour) trip to Ashland is also a possibility. Have fun

Dunsmuir is a great little town in the Sacramento River Canyon, and Castle Crags (just up I-5 a few miles) is one of my favorite hikes.

I want to thank all of you that came for investing the time to help plan some great trips for all of us. I know you are all busy and it means a lot to me that you showed up. I was so happy when I left as I briefly looked at all of your votes and it IS VERY EXCITING! I can already tell a few winners and I will tally the results and post them here within the next couple of weeks.
    Thanks again!

Death Valley trip, same itinerary as previous trip in April, Golden Canyon, Fall Canyon, Indian pass, Furnace Canyon, 5 nights either camping in group campsite or regular campsite with options to stay at lodges. Inexpensive and in CA too...

I am so excited to see all you tonight. You will all be in on deciding what we do as a group for the coming 2 years!!! When you arrive head straight to the counter to order something and get your drink and then come into the room to sit down....see you soon!!! Maybe a badge is in order for this evening...the EVENT PLANNERS AND DREAMERS!!!!!

Sorry, Leigh. I have some artwork I have to get done by this evening. If I finish by 5 I'll be there. In the meantime, here's my two cents: Wales Coast Walk and Snowdonia; McKenzie River, OR (great place to stay, hiking and river rafting); Bhutan; Ho Chi Minh Trail, Viet Nam; Nakasendo Trail, Japan; return to Kernville! (I guess that was a dime's worth!) Happy to do additional research for the group if there's any other interest and submit details to you.

Will miss this..I'm routing for Acadia National Park in Maine

Also hikes around The Cinque Terre in Italy

    August 1, 2014

    • Lynda K.

Leigh. I'm gonna research this with trails. I am very familiar with Cinque Terre. Home base would be Monterosso. Many many trails besides the 5 village cliff top trail. I'll research!!

I have a conflict so I will not be able to join you tonight, but here are my 2 cents. A camping or rustic lodge trip in the Lakes Basin area on Hwy 49, a pristine location with mountain hiking on and off the PCT and lakes all around. It is @ 4 1/2 hours away. I have maps. Big Sur, Tahoe, and Yosemite remain big favorites as well.

For this event.... if you come I need you to order something to eat. They have small personal pizza's and also a salad if you just want something small. For us to use their meeting room we need to support them. If you don't feel like you will be able to eat something then simply email me your ideas instead of coming...the more specific and detailed you are the better chance you have of it happening. Just suggesting a spot makes it a ton of work for me. Suggesting a spot, campground and 3 specific hikes really helps!

Leigh, I won't be able to attend this planning event but another Death Valley trip in the late fall (November) might be of consideration.. or Joshua Tree?
