Mount Carmel and Big Sur expedition

This is a Big Sur weekend. We will be hiking 3 days with Mt. Carmel on Saturday.

We are camping and unless you have asked to be with me you will need to make a reservation. I have made two reservations (max reservations one person can make) for Pfeiffer State Park for my car pool. I will have the big tent that sleeps 4 in style (its a 10 person tent) on one of the sites. And on the other we will have small tents. The sites are restricted to a total of 2 cars per campsite and 8 people.
I have camp sites 168 and 176 which are very close together. There are a few left right next to these sites. Please make your reservations at:
http://www.reserveamerica.com/campgroundSearchResult.do?context=CampingSpot&topTabIndex=CampingSpot

This is what our agenda looks like!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Friday-

Garrapatta Ridge hike.

This is a gorgeous 6 mile strenuous loop with fantastic views. The trail is tricky in some spots as erosion has make the steep descent difficult. That being said, it is SO WORTH IT! It's one of my favorite hikes in the Big Sur area. I know not all can do this hike on Friday as some of you are coming just to camp Friday night and hike Saturday and Sunday but for those of you that are joining us we are planning to leave Santa Rosa by 8:30. We will be meeting at the Kula Island Steakhouse and Sushi Bar at 11:30. http://www.kula-ranch.com/ We will have lunch and head to the trailhead from the steakhouse by 12:45!

Saturday-

Mt Carmel

Yay...a great challenge for us at 10 miles and just under 3000 feet. This hike follows the high ridges in the western reaches of the Santa Lucia Range and leads to a dramatic vista overlooking the rugged interior of the Ventana Wilderness. The trailhead can be found as follows:From Hwy 1, 11.5 miles south of Carmel and 14 miles north of Big Sur, turn east onto Palo Colorado Rd. Follow this road 7.4 miles to the trailhead and campground at Bottchers Gap. We plan to be on the trail by 10. Because most of us are coming from the campground at Pffeifer Big Sur campground it is hard to predict exactly when we will be starting out. If you are not camping with us please allow some leeway in the starting time. I would recommend being there by 9:30. We will leave our campsite (Pffeifer) at 8:45. The best way is always to part of the group at the campground!

A good trail description is available at:

http://www.summitpost.org/mount-carmel/150895

Sunday-

Alert! For Sunday the plans have changed! Originally I had thought to head to Pt. Lobos to explore, but in talking with the ranger, I discovered the trails there are very short. The ranger pointed out that we are camping at the trailhead to several great hikes. So we will do Pt. Lobos next time and we will do a great shuttle hike starting at 9:30am at Ventana Inn- Vista Point parking area and ending at the campsite! It will be 12.5 miles and about 1600 feet. It's an easier hike because the first 4 miles will be on a dirt road (Coast Ridge Rd.) we then hit Terrace creek camp and ending on the beautiful Pine Ridge trail that meanders along a gorge. We do have the option of a 20 mile hike into Skyes hot springs.....I'll leave that up to the group consensus!!

Details:

TRANSPORTATION:

I have the following that have asked to be at the reserved camp sites and we are full. If you are not on the list then that means that since you didn't contact me asking to be at the currently reserved campsites and you will need to reserve a campsite for yourself. We are at max capacity with 4 cars. Those in the reserved campsite...it will be $20 per person for the two nights..you can give the money when you get to the campsite.

Leigh's car: Rosemary and Kathie have requested to ride with me. Rosemary...can we meet at your house at 8 to pack you two up?

Brenda's car: (Krista is still working things out...you'll need to check with her first): I'm hoping that Jane, Caluha and Margaret are hopping in here)

Sara's car: Sara is joining us Friday evening

FOOD:

Let's break up into 2 dinner crews. One group will be responsible for one night and the other group will be responsible for the 2nd. Let's just do it by alphabet

1st group Friday night...Leigh I'm thinking of vegie chili w/brown rice, Kathie (how about your signature steak dish? :) Brenda (appetizer), Caluha (Roasted vegies? ;) ), Jane(that wonderful green salad?), Johnnie (appetizer) and Krista (yummy dessert?)! My suggestions are off the top of my head....please feel free to select what you would like to bring! :)

2nd group Saturday night...Margaret, Meg, Rosemary, Susan, Masali, Sara and Zi!

Also Please bring a bottle of wine and then you will need your own breakfast and lunch items. Please post in the comment section any allergies or food issues you have.

I'm bringing a stove but could someone else bring one too? I have one lantern. We'll need a couple more plus please all bring your headlamps. Anyone with firewood please bring some. I'm bringing some. I have plates, cups and forks. You will need to bring anything you need to cook, prepare and serve your dinner.

The ranger said..be prepared for cold damp nights.

I expect us to be back in Santa Rosa by 7pm appx unless we decide to stop for dinner on the way home.

In the spirit of fun and enjoyment, please let me tell you that we do have a schedule that we follow as far as hiking times. Some people have been frustrated with that in the past when the relaxed camping spirit has set in. I've tried it without a schedule and have found that frustrates people even more and makes it very hard to get the activities accomplished so I do stick with the times established. Please make sure that this is something you will enjoy!

See you on the trail!

Elizabeth--maybe if you download the photos from your camera to your pc in a windows folder, then rotate them, then upload from the pc? I'm not sure what process you use....

    November 5, 2012

  • Elisabeth d.

I posted the photos in the correct rotation. now they are messed up and i cant figure out how to re-orient them. Let me know if you know how to correct that. Thanks for a great trip, all of you.

This trip was just perfect. I'm almost scared to post another Big Sur adventure because how could we ever top this trip? The weather was perfect and the views so crystal clear. Then of course the food and the company was sublime!!! I feel so fortunate that I had you all for companionship! You make my life that much more richer! THank you!

Dan has freed his schedule and will join me. I've looked at a map...no, i will not meet you at the steakhouse, and we may meet you no earlier than the Saturday hike. Warning to the latecomers: Hwy 1 is closed due to construction from 9pm to 7am near Big Sur.
Here is Andrew Molera State Park's advisory:
Complete highway closures 9 pm to 7 am Sunday through Thursday from October 11, 2012 to February 28, 2013. Visitors will not be able to arrive from or depart to the north during this time.

Does anyone know how to get ahold of Caluha? I haven't heard back from her.

    October 29, 2012

    • Leigh

HI Brenda, I've always used Caluha's email. Did you email her?

I'm also vegetarian but eat just about anything that's not meat or poultry.

    October 29, 2012

  • Elisabeth d.

i plan on staying at andrew molera -no reservation campsite- since it looks like there is no campsite available at Pfeiffer big Sur. I will drive by PBS and ask just in case they keep some sites open or have a cancellation. i plan to meet you at the steakhouse for the Friday hike.
Food: cheeses and crackers for the second night. Dont know about the first night. maybe a green bean salad, something that would not wilt.
Another meetup is doing Mt Manual at Big Sur on Saturday. http://www.meetup.com/WILD-WEST/events/78267232/

YEA! YEA! Jessie, we will be soooo happy to have you come!!

    October 29, 2012

  • Margaret

I will bring a sliced tri-tip--I have a vegie taco recipe, but it might be too much like what Leigh is bringing for Friday. Open to a suggestion from the vegetarians in the group, but I need to make up my mind soon so that I can get my act together!!
I could also go with something like vegie burgers if we have a way to cook them--I don't have a stove.

    October 29, 2012

    • Brenda P.

Leigh mentioned that she is switching from the chili to meat and I am going to make a vegetarian entree for Friday. I will bring a stove and there's always the fire. However, I will have plenty of protein food for me... so no worries about making something specifically vegetarian.

      October 29, 2012

  • Krista

My husband is going to join us too :) We'll bring desserts for Friday night for everyone. Maybe something pumpkin and something chocolate.

    October 29, 2012

  • Rosemary

I am gluten and casein intolerant. I will bring a greek salad like the one I made for the Halloween hike. Because I avoid certain foods: wheat, rye, barley, dairy (except for aged cheeses like cheddar, parmesan, etc.), I can bring something extra for myself for the first night. It would be great if you could keep croutons on the side of a salad or substitute gluten free San-J Tamari sauce for soy sauce and maybe even use gluten free pasta in your salads (unless they have dairy, then don't worry about it). I don't eat desserts so no need to bake gluten free for me.

Just some ideas....I will make sure that I am covered either way.

    October 29, 2012

  • Elisabeth d.

If we are 16, can we all share your 2 campsites, Leigh?

    October 28, 2012

  • Brenda P.

I can drive 3 people (plus me) comfortably along with all of our gear. I am in Rohnert Park, but can pick up in Santa Rosa if that is helpful. Please let me know ASAP if you would like a ride.

I also have a large tent that an easily accomodate 4 people. Let me know if anyone wants a spot.

FYI: I am vegetarian and will bring plenty of my own protein. However, if you have a dish that you can add meat to later (maybe like a chicken salad), I woud appreciate the opportuniy to try it without meat. Thanks!

If it rains, it would be great if someone can bring an easy up.

Leigh, any chance you have room for a single tent on one of your campsites? If so, please let me know! It's been some time!

    October 27, 2012

  • Brenda P.

I can drive my van too if anyone wants to carpool. I can bring a small 2 person tent and would love to share a site. I don't need much room and would happily have a room mate.

    October 23, 2012

    • Krista

We should meet and see. Might just work great.

      October 23, 2012

  • Krista

I'd really like to come if the weather is warm enough for camping. I'd appreciate any update on the camping availability, and I'd love to carpool. I have a comfy van if someone or ones can help with the cost.

This will be fun! Plan on a tough exhausting hike on Saturday and a beautiful easier one on Sunday. I'm arriving early with a hike on the way on Friday. I will update the site this weekend with the hike details. Let's plan to have dinner together Friday and Saturday nights with everyone bringing an entree style dish (main meal dish or hearty salad) for one of the nights and an appetizer/dessert for the other. You will need to bring your own breakfast and lunch.
    More details to follow!!!

Hi Leigh! Any updates on whether a campsite has been booked or are we all to fend for ourselves regarding overnight stay? If so, where are people planning on staying?

  • Amy H.

I would like to do the Saturday and Sunday hikes for this one but I can't do Friday because I am working. My husband and I would stay in a motel on Saturday night. If it is OK to do it that way. Let me know more about the Saturday and Sunday hikes and times they start with the address so I can map quest the location and get there. This sounds like it will be fun.

Hi all Mt. Carmel hikers... I was informed that September is still too warm for this hike. I have moved the Big Sur weekend with this hike on Saturday until November. It will be a weekend trip. More details to follow...you will be able to do all 3 days of hiking with me and stay down there or you can choose. I'll be updating this posting as time draws nearer. I just wanted you to make sure you saved the dates in your appt. books!
