Rainy Turkey Day-Hike at Annadel and then to Rosemary's house for lunch potluck

It's a day of celebration and appreciation of this rainy weather that is going to make everything gloriously green!...We are going to celebrate our November birthdays and Thanksgiving!

This route is about 6.5 miles with an elevation gain of about 400 feet.

We are going to do the Spring Creek Trail, circle around lovely Lake Ilsanjo and continue back on Canyon Trail. I found a great detailed description of the route that with the use of the map found on the brochure you will be able to see exactly where we are going. The two links are below:

http://fleetfeetsantarosa.com/Routes/anna_6mi.htm (for trail route info)
http://www.parks.ca.g... (for brochure which if you continue to end has a great map!)

Driving Directions to Trailhead: -

  • From Highway 12 East Bound from 101
  • At the stoplight continue straight onto Hoen Ave.
  • Take a right at the light onto Summerfield Ave.
  • Take a left on Parktrail drive (2nd street on left).
  • Park about a 1/3 of a mile down the road.

When you RSVP please indicate what you are bringing...entree items and hearty salads are always appreciated. Please bring a wrapped birthday gift (an outdoor oriented item that you would love to get as a birthday present) for our gift box. If you brought a gift last month then you don't need to contribute this month. Our birthday honorees get to choose a gift from the box.

As always:

  • Please always check your email the night before just in case there are any necessary adjustments or cancellations. This is especially important if there are any weather issues. Cancellations due to weather will be posted by 10pm the previous evening.
  • We combine enjoyment of the trail with respect for everyone’s time. A steady pace and we just keep going! If you are a fast hiker, you will be asked to periodically wait for the group. If you are finding that you are lagging behind, you will be asked to focus your energy on keeping up the best you can ...forgoing picture taking, dancing and scat identification. We also move along as soon as all lagging members are in close visual sight. Please make sure this is something you will enjoy.
  • Give yourself time to find the trail head or car pool meeting spot so that you arrive prior to the scheduled time. That is the time we leave. It would be disappointing to miss due to late arrival. We leave the car pool sites on time and we START hiking at the starting time!!!
  • Wear comfortable hiking shoes with good rugged soles that are well broken in.
  • Duration: 4 hours appx.
  • Facilities: at the parking lot
  • Dogs?: none allowed
  • Bring plenty of water. More than one bottle is usually a good idea.
  • Dress in layers. The hike starts off cool but rapidly warms up.
  • Make sure the consistent drivers always get the first "rider" seats when they want to be a rider. Once the car is full then the people left would be the people that have not been recent drivers and then one of them would have an opportunity to drive and do their share. If we have no one stepping up to the plate to offer to drive then it would be a simple discussion of who has not driven most recently and the responsibility will fall to them for that day.

Always try to car-pool if you can. Santa Rosa car pool is with at Coddingtown Library parking lot. The library is on the north side of Coddingtown across the parking lot from Whole Foods. If there is a noted car pool that is full or doesn’t work for you it would be wonderful if posted your own on the hike’s comments spot. If you are a rider than make sure to give your driver gas money. The general meetup guideline is …1 driving hour and under $5 and over 1 hour driving $8. Please show appreciation to your driver..otherwise you might find yourself driving the next time.

I think my first wanderers hike that I have had to change my rsvp to no. Waiting for the last minute, I was hoping that a chest cold I have would lighten, but, alas, no. I am sure that all will be very fun, I expect to see lots of great photos!! - r

A wonderful day thanks in part to the threat of rain which barely made an appearance but ended up driving us indoors after the hike. It turned out to be the perfect place to be. It gave everyone a chance to be warm, comfortable and completely relaxed. Big thanks to Leigh for superior organizing, Rosemary for being the gracious hostess, Stacy for our special birthday song and the designer of my birthday headgear. It’s nice to know that I know own the perfect headwear for virtually any occasion.

Looks like we are going have some fun today splish splashing our way along the trail! I'll have a few emergency rain ponchos for those of you that don't know how water proof your gear is but try and bring a rain hat if you have one! Hiking in the rain is so much more enjoyable when you aren't all tied up in your hood on your rain coat!
Extra shoes as well as an outfit change will be comfy and cozy after!
    Lets have some fun today!

I am going to bring an eggplant casserole. OK to reheat at your house, Rosemary?

    November 16, 2012

I am bringing soup, as we will likely be at my house and can have something warm.

    November 14, 2012

  • Marcelyn

Yay, indeed! Thanks, Leigh! I will be bringing a salad of arugula and roasted butternut squash with a few other goodies tossed in. And a bottle of wine, or course! Who wants to carpool from Chickaluma?

    November 13, 2012

    • Elaine d.

I will be coming from St. Helena.....I think Petaluma will be on my way......

      November 14, 2012

  • Leigh

Yay...Rosemary has offered her firepit for us to warm up by and enjoy our potlock if the weather is bad. So as of now...this is how it stands. Weather improves...we stick to the original beach plan.
If the weather report on Friday is still predicting rain we will move the hike to Annadel (appx. same mileage) and Rosemary will provide us with directions after the hike to her house for our potluck. The weather gods will not cheat us out of our Thanksgiving/Birthday celebration! Rosemary...you now have achieved "exalted" status for stepping in to save the day!
Remember to check back Friday to see where the hike will be!

    November 13, 2012

The forecast is predicting at 60% chance of rain. We will have to change our plans! I'm open to suggestions, ideas..etc

    November 12, 2012

  • Leigh

I looked at the long range weather forecast and as of now the weather is NOT looking good. We ARE definitely having a hike on Saturday...rain or shine but our plans might change. I will update by Tuesday so that we know how to proceed with our food plans. We might need to move inside....or head to a restaurant. Check back on Tuesday night!

    November 11, 2012

  • Kathy F

This is now a week away. Almost no one has signed up for the pot luck. Please (as Leigh requested in the hike description) update your RSVP to include what you're bringing. Don't put it in the comments here, it gets lost if there's a lot of conversation.

    November 10, 2012

    • Leigh

Thank you so much Kathy! She's right...we have our big Thanksgiving feast right around the corner. We will need more entree type items and hearty salads. I've updated my RSVP to include a spiral cut ham. Remember we are honoring our November birthday members and any additions to the gift bag (an outdoor related wrapped gift that you would like to receive for you birthday would be great) are greatly appreciated! Also remember to bring what you will be drinking. Please don't count on others to provide your beverage!
