Evening Shiloh Back Loop (Good Exercise)

This trek through Shiloh will take us through the 'back loop', but will not include the high vista point. While there are no extreme climbs, there is definitely some elevation gain involved. Due to the quality of the back loop trail, it is recommended for the sure-footed.

Our pace will be relaxed and steady.  It's about 3.5 miles with an elevation gain of around 900 feet (with all the ups and downs).  This will take us us about 1:45 hours.  It's a great way get a good stretch in after work, and still leave time to get home for dinner.

We head out on Big Leaf Trail and quickly take a left onto Creekside trail for a walk up a canyon under shady pines and oaks.  After leaving the canyon we enter a grassy valley complete with a scenic pond.

Circling around the backside of the meadow, we take the Ridge Trail LEFT about 200 yards or so, then head off on the less used Canyon Trail. Here we will wind down and up into little canyons with oaks, madrones, and bay, slowly making a climb out of the back canyon where we pick up the Big Leaf trail to take us back to the parking lot.

===========

It's a short hike, but as always it is a good idea to come prepared with the following:

  • Water
  • Sunblock/Hat
  • Layered clothing - even if it is a warm day, sometimes it cools off quickly as the sun gets low and our coastal climate moves in.
  • Comfortable walking shoes

FYI - There is a $7.00 parking fee, but there is ample street parking adjacent to the park entrance.

      I go a lot of times to IronSprings brewery in Fairfax and watch games and have a brew, after a hike...?? That might be too out of way as well. We also may be too tired after hike and BBQ...........

    Hey Richard: I have to play ice hockey at 7:30 pm at Snoopy's Home Ice in Santa Rosa and need to leave Shiloh around 6:30, but I am hoping to get in some hiking with you. Probably not best to RSVP and take a spot though. Everyone is welcome to come to the hockey game afterwards.

      No problem with the spots, as you see, we have dropped back a bit. We should make it back close to 6:30.

      I don't know if you know Shiloh, but we will be heading up the Creekside Trail, followed by the Pond Trail, then heading towards the MarkWest Creek trail, where we will take a right onto the Canyon trail and on, essentially taking the outermost loop, clockwise. You may find a map here: http://www.sonoma-cou... . We will have to move along, as we have a time commitment with the setting sun (which means we will head out farily promptly as well. Other than that, hope to see you on the trail.

    I would love to do this - are well behaved and leashed dogs allowed?

    October 21, 2012

    • Connie

      Laura, I happen to know that Shiloh is the one County Regional Park that does not allow dogs. :(
