Way a way to jumpstart your morning! We expect to be off the trail so you can be headed on to a productive day by noon. This hike is a favorite and worth doing over and over. The 5-mile MODERATE Half-a-Canoe Loop trail follows an old fire road and it meanders along a roller coaster type ridge with sweeping views of both lake arms and then down to the shores of Lake Sonoma. The return trip takes you gradually up through grassy fields to the ridge. This trail is a "MUST DO" if you have never done it...gorgeous views of Lake Sonoma! This trip does NOT have a snack stop so if you need refueling along the way bring something easy to snack on as we walk.
A trail description is available at : http://go.northbay.pressdemocrat.com/clip/outdoors.cfm?StartRow=30&Activity=Hiking (though we do the trail in the opposite direction as this guide)
Here are the detailed directions:
From Highway 101 in Healdsburg head 10.3 miles northwest on Dry Creek Road to the base of Warm Springs Dam and Lake Sonoma Visitor Center on the right. (Dry Creek Road becomes Skaggs Springs Road in the park)
From the visitor center, continue 3.6 miles, crossing the bridge over Lake Sonoma, to the posted No Name Flat parking lot on the left. (En route, the road becomes Rockpile Road) Take note....after you cross Lake Sonoma on the bridge the road starts to climb steeply up the ridge...just keep going until you see the No Name Flat sign. Hikers often seem to think they missed it because you will pass other dirt parking lots on your right. No Name Flat is clearly marked and on your LEFT.
Make sure to check the website the night before just in case there have been any necessary adjustments.
