WORK OFF THANKSGIVING! Complete Loop at Armstrong Woods! (Moderate-Strenuous)

  • This location is shown only to members

Please see new information on car pooling below

This hike is about 7 miles with an elevation gain of 2200ft. We've done most of this many times at Armstrong Woods. Both as an evening and a day hike doing a variation of this on East Ridge and Pool Ridge trails. This time we will be seeing the total complete loop at Armstrong Woods. We start off with a great climb to the ridge through the forest....immediate warmup on East Ridge! We'll continue to climb our way along the ridge to a grassy meadow with a view when the weather cooperates! We then will continue out to Bull Frog Pond which at this time of year probably won't have too many frogs or any water but will give us a good extention to our walk. We will make our way back on the road for a bit to catch Pool Ridge trail for the remainder of the way back down throught the park. We have an amazing final mile through the old growth redwoods. As you can tell, this hike has a few relentless hills that keep going on up but it is well worth the huffs and the puffs to get up there. You will travel through MAGNIFICENT red woods forest and drop dead forest scenery. If you haven't done this hike...this one is a must do. You will find yourself doing this hike time and time again, especially if you stick with The Wanderers! I promise you, you won't be disappointed! To enjoy this hike you should be able to comfortably walk uphill at a steady pace for an extended period and maneuver some steep grades down.

FOR car pools ...we have a change. Please document your car pool info in your RSVP comments NOT the general comments below. That will eliminate many msgs to the hike attendees. Car pool etiquette- Come prepared to drive, be aware that there may be no others wanting to car pool from your selected location or there might be a lot of people and everyone might want to ride. We determine who gets the rider seats by who has most recently been a driver in the past. This is worked out based by who shows up at the car pool location. We can't guarantee anyone a seat because we never know until that day who will show up. We do our best to work it out and make everyone happy but we need everyone to pitch in and help make it work!

Then PLEASE if possible try to use the location below. The more locations we have the less effective we are and it's so much more complicated. Exceptions would be if you are not close to the selected location.

Car Pool- Windsor Office Depot parking lot leaving at 8:20

To get to the trail head:

From downtown Guerneville on Main St. (Highway 116), drive 2.3 miles north on Armstrong Woods Road to the visitor center on the right, just before the state park entrance station. Park in the large lot on the right by the visitor center.

As always:

  • Wear comfortable hiking shoes
  • Bring water and apply sunscreen
  • Wear layers. This hike will start off cool but you will warm up quickly!
  • This hike doesn't include a lunch stop due to the early start time. Though we will stop out at Bull Frog Campground for a few minutes for a snack.
  • Have fun!

I definately worked off that Thanksgiving Feast! Now, I have an idea of what Moderate-Strenuous really means! Next time, I will come more prepared with some good hiking boots and light-weight clothing! Maybe need to scale back my goals and get in better shape before I take on a strenous hike.

Hi all, I'm still hoping to make it in the morning, but I'm nursing a very mysterious foot injury. My plan is for it to disappear as quickly as it came. I'll see what a night's rest does and give an update in the morning.

All done trying to set up carpooling....these do not work out with this wanderer group. I'll NOT be going to PGE, as all have bagged out. If anybody changes their mind, call me at[masked] in the morn., otherwise, see you at the trailhead.
