7th Annual Iron Brewer 2014

Carol Shelton Wines has agreed to be our host again this year. Thank-you Mitch and Carol! Iron Brewer 2014 will be held Saturday Feb. 1st starting at 8:30 am. Sign-ups will be open Fri. Jan. 10th @ 6:00 am. This meet up post is for people to RSVP that aren't brewing at the event, but will be attending. Starting the 10th use the two meet up posts that were created (one for 5 gal and one for 10 gal) to sign up and pay your fees on paypal.

This event will be a potluck lunch. We will be grilling something on the grill. The rules Mitch wants followed are no one is allowed to pitch any yeast inside the winery, or bring homebrew to the event. The reason is, this is a licensed Winery and they are not licensed to make beer. We can make wort inside the winery. The wort becomes beer after the yeast is pitched. Our homebrew has had no federal taxes paid on it, so unless it’s brought to a competition with judging, or a fund raiser for a non-profit we can’t legally be drinking it at the winery.

   Fellow Beerocrats

The Iron Brewer is an annual event . The space we have each year determines the number of entrants. All members that are current with their dues are invited to participate. Brewers can choose to brew 10 gal. or 5 gal. all grain, batches. As many as 10 teams have brewed in the past. This year we have room for 10 teams. The sign ups are announced and the first 10 teams to sign up and pay their fees on Paypal are in. If you haven’t already, this is a good time to pay your dues for 2014.  The actual cost of ingredients is more than the entry fee. The club makes up the difference in cost. Brewers set up their systems the day of the event and the secret ingredients are passed out. Only the yeast will be passed out prior to the event. All other ingredients will be kept secret and passed out the day of the event. Everybody gets the same ingredients proportionate to their batch size. You may use the ingredients however you choose.  All grains will be milled and packaged separately. The hops will be in pellet form. The yeast we’re using this year is (drum roll…) WLP002. After you pay your fees (on Paypal, no money will be collected at the BP), details will be posted on when to go by the BP and pick up your yeast. 2 vials for 10 gal batches, and 1 vial for 5 gal. (It's encouraged you make a starter) No other ingredients may be used. Brewers may treat their water with salts and or acid as they choose. You also may bring your own water if you like. The water at the winery will be Russian River water from Sonoma County Water Agency.

This will be a potluck Bar-B-Q. The club will provide something for the grill; bring a side dish and commercial beer to share. We will all get together near the end of March for the “Iron Brewer People’s choice judging competition”. Ribbons and awards will be awarded for the 1st, 2nd, and the 3rd place beer judged by all in attendance. Invite your family and friends.

I got some random pictures that we took of Iron Brewer up loaded. Sorry that it took so long my phone was not wanting to talk to my computer for a while. Personal issues I guess... ;-)

What a fantastic Iron Brewer event! Special thanks to Mike and Kevin for organizing this years event. Thank you Mitch and Carol for being such wonderful sponsors. Also I have to say our members did a great job setting up their brewing equipment and breaking down at the end of the day. Looking forward to trying the results next month! Cheers!

Awesome Day! As always so great to see everyone come together, brew on different systems and have different ways of getting to the same end. It was really great to see the system that Dustin and Drew were working to make sure they were not the last man standing this time....although they did win last year so something has to be said for that! :) its just great to see the group together having a good time!

    Pt: 1
Where do I start? I guess let’s start with the organization team… Mike, Ron, Cami and Dustin. Big hats off for just holding this thing DOWN and making it happen seamlessly! Perfectly executed and a ton of fun! It is always great to chat with you guys! Thank you so much! To Mitch… always great to chat with you. Thank you so much to you and your wonderful wife Carol for your graciousness in hosting this event! Without the place… it just doesn’t happen so thank you so much. I know that you love brewing as much as the next guy so for you to take the day off and watch everyone else brew their brains out while you play host does not go unnoticed and is VERY MUCH appreciated. Seriously… thank you.

To the other teams… It is always a blast to brew next to other people that are equally passionate about their craft. I love chatting with everyone about what they are doing and how they are doing it. I always learn so much at these events.

Mike, here again… I love picking your brain about brewing! Thank you so much for being a resource to this whole crew. Lastly… it was great to see some of the faces from the Beverage People come through. I saw Nancy go by but I was busy with a 5 minute hop addition and we had a chance to hang with Joe for a few on his “lunch break.” It’s always good to see those folks and goes a long way towards bonding the Sonoma County “Brewing” community. In short, it was a really good time and a class act event. Thanks to all! Cheers!

PS- I will have pictures posted in the next few days. You all look “marvelous.”

That's great! And remember our hostess is one of, if not the most awarded winemakers in the county, so buy a bottle or two of her excellent Zin's to thank her for her continued support of the Beerocrats. I also understand she's made a few elegant Pinots recently, if they're still available. Please considered becoming a member of "Carols Bunch"

Just to play devils advocate here... it's not really any big deal because this is only for "bragging rights" but shouldn't any rules or stipulations about what a team can use or can not use have been stated in the initial event listing? It seems odd to have something like this listed just 36/48 hours before the event. Did I miss this in the original listing? Just playing devils advocate. ;-)

Robert, just imagine you've received a load of grapes with Brix over the top and acid levels tanked, I know your gonna make the best damn brew you can.
