Good writing is paramount, and I'll read most anything that's well written (barring racist manifestos). However, consistently my enjoyment of any book is multiplied by the presence of a supernatural element.
I'm going to stick to the supernatural on this one: The Tommyknockers, Stephen King House of Leaves, Mark Danielewski Finch, Jeff Vandermeer
So hard to choose. Like I've been sitting here for five minutes... How about favorite paranormal short story? That's an easier one. Stone Animals, Kelly Link.
The Magicians, Lev Grossman R.R. Martin said, "The Magicians is to Harry Potter as a shot of Irish whiskey is to a glass of weak tea."
