Aurora Palo Alto – Unveiling and First Lighting Event

Aurora is an opalescent willow with hand-beaten copper leaves that chime in the wind:  This Burning Man favorite will be installed in King Plaza in Palo Alto for (at least) the coming year!

When:  Saturday, November 16th  from 3pm-7pm (first lighting at 6pm)

Where:  King Plaza, Hamilton between Bryant & Ramona Streets

Aurora ( was on the Playa in 2012, and there has been a huge local effort to place this beautiful tree in front of Palo Alto City Hall for a full year!  The tree has over 40,000 LED lights on it, and there will be kiosks for the public to interact and program the lights to change colors in patterns they choose.

The dedication ceremony is on Saturday, Nov 16th and the first lighting is at 6pm.  The artist, Charlie Gadaken, will be there to demonstrate how to interact with the lights beginning at 5pm.  There will be activities going on all afternoon to play with Aurora (and with the public) in true burner style.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION:  If you’d like to bring your art car … live band … DJ … hoop or light poi or circus act, PLEASE DO!  Email [masked] with the subject line “Aurora” to be included in the festivities!

What can we bring? Does anyone need any help, i.e. physical labor? If so what time should we be there?

Yes, I will try to be available. I had planned on coming at 3 but now I'll plan on 6PM. How shall I locate you? I'll have on bicycle attire.

The tree lights at 6pm, so it may be a bit of a melee at that time. I will likely be standing to the left of the tree in the back of the crowd. I will be wearing a black hoodie with a burner-like symbol on the back (CORE 2011) and goggles. Thanks, see you tomorrow!

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
