Golden Gate Bridge Coastal Trail Loop

Lets Ride!

http://www.meetup.com/South-Bay-Mountain-Bike/photos/9138732/

Time to head back north to see these great views of the city, the bridge, and the ocean. We did this ride twice last year and had a great time. You should plan now to attend before it fills up.

Ok first off, this ride is just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. It is a little further than our normal rides, but I think the views will be awesome if the fog stays away.

We will start from a dirt lot on Bunker Road. Print out these directions to follow.

Tires roll at 10:13 AM or sooner if all YES RSVP's are present. Please be there by the meet time, we don't want to leave without you!

Remember, all riders need to be members of Meetup.com & South Bay Mountain Bike Group. Guest are no longer allowed. All riders need to RSVP as a member.

Start: from the dirt parking lot where Coastal Trail crosses Bunker Road.
Distance: 15 miles?
Ride time: About 3 1/2 hours?
Difficulty: moderate, nontechnical ride with some steady climbing, suitable for hardy beginners. This is a Level 2 Ride.
Trail surface: 10% dirt fire road, 80% paved road, and 10% single track.

Directions:

North on Highway 101 over the Golden Gate Bridge.
You may want to stop at the vista point just after you cross the bridge, to use the restrooms, there are none from here to the start point.

Exit the Highway after you cross the Golden Gate Bridge at Alexander Ave, just after the vista point area.

When you exit, keep to the right and head toward Sausalito.

Turn left in about a half mile. You want to take the second left after you exit the freeway. There is an info sign that directs you left for, "Fort Baker/Toward Marin Headlands" Drive through the tunnel ahead. This is Bunker Road West.                                                                                                                               You will past McCullough Road on the left, then look for a field on the left and right.        Just after the right field is a small dirt parking area used by hikers & bikers.

There may be cars parked there already. I will try to arrive early.

You should allow about 1 1/2 hours from San Jose area.

Note:The dirt lot is about 1.9 miles from the left turn off of Alexander Ave.

Note:Wear layers in case the fog is still in the area. Bring water & a snack.

***Please remember, a helmet is required for all our rides***

The tunnel going to "Fort Baker/Toward Marin Headlands" is closed to traffic (car and bicycles) due to construction. I was there today on my road bike. The alternate way to get to the dirt parking lot on Bunker Road is via McCullough Road.
In other words, after the GG Bridge, keep to the right and head toward Sausalito. Turn left immediately after you exit the freeway. There is an info sign that directs you left for, "Coastal Road/Marin Headlands" Drive through the tunnel ahead and climb Coastal Road. You will arrive at a roundabout (with a restroom and beautiful vistas). Take the first right. This is McCullough but I could not see any sign. Follow it down until the T, at Bunker Road West. Take a left and you will arrive at the dirt parking lot.

A friend told me the traffic is going to be horrific north of the bay because of the Nascar race in Sanoma. But the race doesn’t start until 3pm so we may be fine early in the morning :) Just wanted to give heads up just in case. ;) This will be my first ride with all you guys and I’m looking forward to it ;) Hope I’m in shape enough and won’t get left behind in the dust lol ;)

It usually gets bad closer to the track, esp. at the 101N to 37E connector. It then becomes a parking lot in that area if you're going to the race. I know, I worked at the track for many years. But, closer to the GGB, early AM isn't so bad.

Ok cool! Thanks for the info! ;)

This is gonna be fun, so in anticipation for the ride I checked out the directions and according to Google, Conzelman Rd doesn't touch Bunker. However, there is a road called McCullough with what appears to be a field/lot just past it. Is this the correct one?

I assume that if you have hit the Presidio Riding Club, you've gone too far?

    June 10, 2013

    • Ray G

@Chaz, I will update the directions this week. We are meeting in the dirt lot on Bunker Road though. This is where we have the last 3 years. Stay tuned.

This is a must do ride for all, we will ride across the Golden Gate Bridge and have a lunch stop at the beach. This is a ride we do once a year just because it's FUN. I know there seems to be a large number of riders, however we will break into smaller groups for safety reasons. Come join us, take a look at the past ride photo's and see what you may be missing.

    May 29, 2013

  • Ray G

WOW... 30 attending in less than 8 hours after posted. This is one of the best rides we do as a group for all skill levels.
