Purisima Creek OSR

This is NOT an easy ride.  This is a 1,400 foot climb/grind.  The uphill is not technically challenging but is very steep in places.  The downhill single track is maybe a 2 (5 being toughest) on the technical scale, mostly because its all downhill. Beginners should not attempt this ride unless you are confident in climbing for 1.5 hours.

More descriptions of the area: http://www.openspace.org/preserves/pr_purisima.asp

Map http://www.openspace.org/preserves/maps/pr_purisima.pdf

Tires roll by 10:10 AM.

We're going to ride up the main Purisima Creek Trail. We will also do a short climb up Grabtown Gulch to show everyone how amazing that trail is. We'll then ride up to Skyline and up for a short while (~2 miles) and ride down the single track section, Whittemore Gulch Trail.  Make sure your brakes are in good shape before the ride.

Bring plenty of water and some kind of snack, you'll want it at the top.

Be prepared for changing conditions.  Often on the ride up there's very little wind and even in the shade it can be quite warm, but it can be foggy and cold at the bottom, and the long downhill may make you cold.  A shell and a long sleeve jersey is highly recommended, even if conditions seem clear at the bottom.

Expect a ride time of 2 hours+ depending on the group.

Remember, all riders need to be members of Meetup & South Bay Mountain Bike Group. Guest are no longer allowed. All riders need to RSVP as a member.

GEAR: The ride leader has the right to refuse anyone's participation due to lack of gear or broken/damaged gear.  Example: Damaged helmets are not acceptable gear.  Be sure to check your tire pressure, brakes and suspension before every ride.  Helmets are required for ALL our rides.

Directions:

The preserve's western access point is accessible from Purisima Creek Road. From the Highway 92 and Highway 1 intersection in Half Moon Bay, travel on Highway 1 south approximately 4.3 miles. Turn left on Verde Road. After turning on to Verde Road and traveling 1/4-mile, continue straight to remain on what becomes Purisima Creek Road. (Verde Road splits off to the right.) Travel approximately 3.7 miles on Purisima Creek Road to reach the Preserve. Parking is available for approximately 5 cars. Additional parking is available on the side of Purisima Creek Road close to the parking lot.

Rain within 24 hours will cancel this ride.

Will post a weather update by 8:30 AM if necessary.

Love this trail, but the new trail opening sounds interesting. Be safe, everyone!

@Steve, this group is all about people who want to ride. We no longer do "maybe's". If you can't be sure you want to ride, then leave the RSVP slot for someone that will be there. You have again missed the point, the Santa Cruz ride is all about the numbers, Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz wants a huge number of riders to show up in support of the new trail. Let's Ride, if you can be there in time?

David ... I'm intending to attend either this ride or the one in Santa Cruz ... depending also if I can get to one or the other in time. If it looks like I can't make it ... I'll update my RSVP in the morning. Love Purisima ... and may opt for this ... as SC is starting to look very crowded ... Thanks ... :)

Oops. Double booked myself (and climbing for 90 minutes might be a real stretch for me..;). Hope someone else will take my spot! Have fun

I've only hiked in Purisma Creek. Looking forward to using my bike! The group should consider El Corte de Madera, which is just a few miles down Skyline.

I love whitmore. the trees are gorgeous and the only real technical part is the beginning climb. I'll be on the longer route that day, but this one also sounds fun.
