Purisima Creek - Easier Single Loop - Creek Trail up, Whittemore Gulch down

This ride will be a slower pace with only a single uphill loop through the main Creek trail to Skyline and down Whittemore Gulch.

This is NOT an easy ride.  This is a 1,400 foot climb/grind.  The uphill is not technically challenging but is very steep in places.  The downhill single track is maybe a 2 (5 being toughest) on the technical scale, mostly because its all downhill.  Beginners should not attempt this ride unless you are confident in climbing for 1.5 hours.
More descriptions of the area:

Tires roll by 10:10 AM.

We're going to ride up the main Purisima Creek Trail. We'll then ride up Skyline for a short while (~2 miles) and ride down the single track section, Whittemore Gulch Trail.  Make sure your brakes are in good shape before the ride.

Bring plenty of water and some kind of snack, you'll want it at the top.

Be prepared for changing conditions.  Often on the ride up there's very little wind and even in the shade it can be quite warm, but it can be foggy and cold at the bottom, and the long downhill may make you cold.  A shell and a long sleeve jersey is highly recommended, even if conditions seem clear at the bottom.

Expect a ride time of 2 hours+ depending on the group.

We usually like to visit the Flying Fish Bar and Grill in Half Moon Bay after the ride.

Remember, all riders need to be members of Meetup & South Bay Mountain Bike Group. Guest are no longer allowed. All riders need to RSVP as a member.

GEAR: The ride leader has the right to refuse anyone's participation due to lack of gear or broken/damaged gear.  Example: Damaged helmets are not acceptable gear.  Be sure to check your tire pressure, brakes and suspension before every ride.  Helmets are required for ALL our rides.

The preserve's western access point is accessible from Purisima Creek Road. From the Highway 92 and Highway 1 intersection in Half Moon Bay, travel on Highway 1 south approximately 4.3 miles. Turn left on Verde Road. After turning on to Verde Road and traveling 1/4-mile, continue straight to remain on what becomes Purisima Creek Road. (Verde Road splits off to the right.) Travel approximately 3.7 miles on Purisima Creek Road to reach the Preserve. Parking is available for approximately 5 cars. Additional parking is available on the side of Purisima Creek Road close to the parking lot.

Rain within 24 hours will cancel this ride.

Will post a weather update by 8:30 AM if necessary.

Aside from the shocking news of the other event, I had a good time here. Both the climb and the rolling singletrack were very enjoyable. The slower pace helps for my first time here. The shaded smoothness is an amazing contrast to some other places. Thanks again Nancy and DJ.

Thanks to all of you for making the ride fun today, despite our sadness. I love how SBMBG riders watch out for each other!
