Soquel Demo Forest

  • This location is shown only to members

Meet at the roadside parking area on Highland Way by the yellow gate at 10:30 AM. You will know this is the correct area by the large amount of cars parked with bike racks.

This will be a  ~ Strong Intermediate Level 3 ~ group ride.

RSVPing YES for a ride and not showing will get you moved to the wait list on the next ride you do wish to go on. Please be courteous and drop out early enough to give the more reliable riders a chance to adjust their schedules and attend.

Tires roll at 10:40 AM or sooner if all YES RSVP's are present. Please be there by the meet time, we will leave without you!

Remember, all riders need to be members of Meetup.com & South Bay Mountain Bike Group. Guest are no longer allowed. All riders need to RSVP as a member.

Distance: 14 miles?

Riding time: 3ish hours?

Difficulty rating: Difficult , steady climbs, technically advanced singletrack with plenty of obstacles.

Trail surface: 53 percent dirt road, 34 percent singletrack, and 13 percent paved road.

Terrain: Smooth dirt road through mixed woodlands to the ridge, cool view, singletrack along ragged ridge, steep desent through lush redwoods.

The climbs are moderate but long. The descents are generally considered intermediate/advanced. However as long as you work those brakes you'll be safe.

The plan is to do the Loop. Bring plenty of water, as well as food, because there is none in the park.

Directions:
Take 17 South toward Santa Cruz. Near the top of 17 take the exit for Summit Road and do a sharp turn to head southeast (you will cross over the highway). Follow Summit Road as it turns into Highland Way in about 5 miles from the freeway exit. Continue down Highland about 5 more miles (about 10 miles from the highway 17 exit) you see a bridge on the right and the signed entrance to the park. A small sign! There is parking on Highland or cross the bridge into the main dirt parking area.

If your not sure where you are going or think you will be late, please leave earlier. It is not fair to have everyone else wait while you get ready to ride. Bring a spare tube and master link?

As organizer, I will reserve the right to change your RSVP should I feel you're not ready for this ride location or you have been a no show on past rides. RSVP priority will be given to current members in good standing.

***Please remember, a helmet is required for all our rides.***

Safety warning: There have been reports of car break-ins at Demo Forest. On the weekends, it's less likely to occur due to the higher volume of people at the park. However, it's still a good idea to remove valuable stuff from your car prior to going.

Great times playing on the obstacles and identifying some inadequacies. Look forward to doing it again.

Tried new things... made a few of them... Only crashed twice I think :-)

One of the most fun rides I've been on. Thanks Andy.

The ride was really fun. We had two riders clear the rock garden on Cussacks and we all managed to clear the log skinny on the same trail. Hopefully next time we will have a larger group.

What type of wheel/spoke you have? May have something floating around. Can check in AM if know what you need.

    May 4, 2013

  • Mike V.

Still waiting for a replacement spoke, hoped it would arrive today but it didn't :(

    May 3, 2013

    • Andy U.

What is the spoke made from, unobtainium?

I'll be driving a white Honda Pilot. My bike is a Knolly Chilcoltin in natural aluminum.

Be sure to bring plenty of water - it may be hot.

I'm already meeting up with a buddy to ride here tomorrow. Maybe I'll catch paths with you.

In case I can't find the group, I'm driving up in a black Jeep truck and riding a Giant bike.

Should not have a problem, just hang out by the bridge and ask others that are there if they are with the South Bay Mountain Bike Group ride? Have a great day out there!

Guys, I finally can't make it this time ... I'll free my spot. Enjoy!

My plan is do head up Highland and then on to Cusacks trail to Ridge, then Corral Trail. If everyone feels up to it, we will then head up Sulfur and down Braille otherwise we will head back to the parking lot.

If you have it, consider bringing elbow and knee protection.

Corral is nice, but I'd be up for adding a Braille or Sawpit loop after the Corral loop. After all this is a "Strong Intermediate" ride :)

      April 26, 2013

    • Andy U.

That's a good point. Let's plan on two loops, anyone who is tired can always opt out of the second one.

Thanks for letting us know, James. Catch us next time.

I am not sure if I can make it so I want someone that really wants to go a chance!!! Have a Great Ride!

    April 28, 2013

    Hi Stephanie.
This ride has always been limited to just eight riders. I want to see how that goes. If it is super manageable, then I will increase the size of the group for the next demo ride. I'm not looking for the fastest downhill riders. Ideally, I am looking for riders who want to try new things (like drops, jumps, skinnys, etc.)

    April 28, 2013

  • Stephanie

    From confirmed to waiting list.
Andy, did you reduce the size of the group or do you only want fast downhill riders?!

    April 27, 2013

  • KAo

Just found out I have to work now. Darn!!!

    April 18, 2013

    • Andy U.

You can catch the ride next time.

      April 25, 2013

The pace will be moderate, but it will involve some extended (30 minutes plus) climbs. All stunts are optional, but we will be stopping to session some sections. This will be a good ride to sharpen your skills!
