Saratoga Gap & Return @ Grizzly Flat Parking Area

  • Jan 11, 2014 · 12:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

We will meet at 12:30 PM in the Grizzly Flat parking lot on Skyline Blvd. This time of the year, we will start later to allow the sun to warm it up some.

Tires roll at 12:44 PM or sooner if all YES RSVP's are present.

Please be there by the meet time, we don't want to leave without you!

There are no restrooms here. Skyline OSP is about 3 miles north and has restrooms.

We will ride south to Saratoga Gap through Long Ridge Open Space Preserve which will take us on Peters Creek and Long Ridge Trails.

This is a great area to ride!!!

Directions:

Page Mill Road to Skyline Blvd. Then turn left and drive 3.3 miles on Skyline, the parking lot is on the left & right sides of the road. The drive up Page Mill will take about 25-30 min from the 280/Page Mill area.

From South Bay area: Saratoga Blvd through Saratoga, it becomes Highway 9 uphill toward Skyline Blvd. At the stop sign at Skyline Blvd, turn right and the parking lot area is in about 3 miles on both sides of the road, immediately after the Palo Alto city limit sign.

If you're coming from Santa Cruz up Highway 9, turn left onto Skyline/Highway 35. The parking lot area is in about 3 miles on both sides of the road, immediately after the Palo Alto city limit sign.

You have read the past ride reviews and seen the pictures, this is a fun group!!! As always, we will never leave anyone behind, take needed breaks, and regroup often. Plan to ride for 2 to 2 1/2 hours.

If your not sure where you are going or think you will be late, please leave earlier. We want you to join us for this ride.

Ride Details:

Difficulty Level: "Moderate with a few modest climbs". On my scale of 1 -5, 1 being easy - this may be a Level 2-3 Ride.

Remember, all riders need to be members of Meetup.com & South Bay Mountain Bike Group. Guest are no longer allowed. All riders need to RSVP as a member.

I will post by 8 AM a weather update if we need to cancel this ride.

Release of Liability:

It was a fun but cold afternoon at the top of the mountain. I love these trails. Thanks to all for another fun ride.

Another great ride and we even found some rain! Or was that mist? Or drizzle? The Grizzly Flat start is nice since it avoids putting the climb into Saratoga Gap at the end of the ride.

Another fun ride with a great group of riders. Those that were a no show, you changed your RSVP after the closing time which did not allow the waitlisters to join us, please do not RSVP for any of my rides again. I will only allow those that have zero no show's in 2014 on my rides!

Enjoyed the misty weather experience! This is one of my favorite places to ride and certainly my favorite biking group. Many thanks to Ray for the help through the difficult rocky and root sections. I have learned so much from this group!

Hey wait listers - there's lots of room on Mike V.'s China Camp ride this same day. It's worth the drive up there and he is a super cool guy. Also if you're into Demo, Cecen's running a ride there, and Kamaljit is hosting a ride at Harvey Bear. All in all, four great rides to choose from on this day so you can get a ride in and still watch 49er playoffs on Sunday. If you don't care for football, you can always enjoy the empty trails at Montebello on Sunday at 10am. That what makes SBMBG northern California's premier mountain bike group! Let's ride!

I was going to ride along Skyline (on my gas-powered bike) to see if I could get specifics on the parking location. But before I do, does anyone have insight as to what the actual parking location is? The map link seems to take me to a place inside the park. (though, that might be the actual meeting spot -- it just seems curious)

even though I'm far down the wait list... just making sure

I edited the map location. We meet in the parking area on Skyline (Hwy 35), 3.3 miles north of the from the intersection of Hwys 9 and 35, and is also described in the ride detail above. That's why Ray always says follow the directions, not the map. :-)

Gene, I had several members request to get on that ride and as I posted in the New Years Day ride... "With 14 members on the wait list, Gene and Rachel doing a no show again... you two are not welcome to RSVP for any of my future rides. This will be a year of doing rides with those that intend to show up." You may wish to attend other event host rides.

No problem. I just wanted to confirm your policy changed.

Ray, at the Ft Ord ride I attended I thought you said your policy was 3 "no shows" before being blocked from future rides.

@Louis, until you get your space time thing worked out I am going to move you to the wait list. There seems to be several members that have theirs under control including your event host.

It's not about if I decide to let you in, it's about you making a commitment to the group, your fellow riders and yourself that you will take a spot and show up. When riders take a spot and don't show up, it prevents someone else from being able to come out and enjoy the ride.

I used to sign up for all rides regardless. When you opened my eyes to this reality I began to consider whether or not I really could make it. I think my record on that score has been great considering how many Meetups Ihave attended.I want to be on all the rides you lead if I can keep the pace on that particular day. But I do not want to have a poor attendance rate. I understand what you are saying. Your requirements will insure that people who make a genuine comittment will will be able to ride and not negate the opportunities of others. Perhaps in some situations I DO belong on a waitlist even though having a WAITLISTED STATUS is distastfull. My comments were just my way to deal with the reality that the date was far enough in the future that there was a possibility that something might come up. Thanks for your thoughtfull comments.
