Well its bin an interesting day. Started out getting lost, couldn't remember where the entrance was to the parking area. Stood in line for well over an hour before what turned out to be my start time. Then this gung ho downhiller who was after me catches me about 3/4 way down and tries to pass without letting me know he was there. He was not successful because he clipped my bars and we both go down causing me to get a front flat. Neither of us got injured and he was super apologetic but it really put a damper on the rest of my day. After walking down the rest of the way to the finish line I fixed my flat and off I went for the remainder of the ride. Maybe I was in a bad mood because I really didn't care for this Enduro, way to much fire road. I mean we had to pass a lot of great single-trak to get to trail 41. When we were done we got a reward of a super long fire road climb back to the festival. I think I'll skip next year, at least I can say I tried it.

Bummer. This Enduro was just not meant to be for SBMBG. The one at Toro Park two weeks ago was way better.

      April 11, 2014

  • Michelle

Do you guys have your race numbers yet? We're going to watch/photograph the downhill portion. :-)

    April 11, 2014

    • Armando

      My start time was 2:16

      April 11, 2014

  • Andy U.

    Too much:
    Bike broken (snapped rear triangle).
    Running out of time.
Been riding sketchy (probably due to broken bike, but still).
Loaner bike doesn't feel right esp. brakes.
    Friend died on downhill course.
Legs dead from climbing yesterday on broken bike.
I'm just too psychologically sketched out at this point to race this.

    April 11, 2014

    • Michelle

Sounds like it was a good move to call it a day.

      April 11, 2014

    • Armando

Sucks to here that Andy. Now you can get a new bike.

      April 11, 2014

  • Andy U.

Well, now I know why I have felt so sketchy on the bike the last few rides...my rear triangle is broken! Unless I can borrow a bike, I am a no-go.

I'm signed up for the women's cat 3 enduro. My goal is to actually finish everything in one piece. Haha!

All race events at sea otter require a race license. If you don't have one, you have to pay for a 1 day license.

      March 22, 2014

    • Andy U.

Hi Sally. If you see me there, say hi.

      April 11, 2014

  • Andy U.

Armando, if possible, we should carpool tomorrow.

    April 10, 2014

    • Armando

Are you staying down there? I'm staying in Salinas Friday night because I'm riding the Gran Fondo Saturday morning.

      April 10, 2014

    • Andy U.

Nah. I'm in SJ. Have fun down there. Have fun in the Fondo. I did it last year.

      April 10, 2014

  • Andy U.

    OK...Here it is:
Stage 1: Pure downhill course. Very man made. Lots and lots of jumps and a couple of drops. Most turns are banked. Takes about 3 minutes to complete. The features are not hard, there are just so many of them. I ended up more or less rolling everything.

Stage 2: Starts with a gravel fire road (yes, you read that right) and then goes into some sweet single track. There are some uphill sections. I am going to hit those sections at 90 to 95% effort.

Stage 3: This one is very long and there is a lot of uphill. It starts with a long stretch of gravel fireroad and then has some singletrack. Basically stage 3 is a mini cross-country race.

Bring something to hold water. When I did this today, there were water stations but no cups and I suffered really severe dehydration.

At the end of the enduro, you have a long ride back to Laguna Seca (watch out for the sheep). If you have a full face, bring it for the first stage.

    April 10, 2014

    • Armando

Are you bringing 2 helmets? lugging one around the entire ride in your back pack? what about knee & elbow pads. So many questions. LOL.

      April 10, 2014

    • Andy U.

I am, actually. My sinister plan is to drop off my DH stuff with my son. As slow as I am on the DH course, it is ridiculous.

      April 10, 2014

  • Andy U.

If the course is the same as 2013, we can do virtual pre-runs by watching videos. Lots of jumps (I suck at jumps). Absolute worst case scenario is that on Thursday I decide the course is too dangerous for me and I pull out.

    1 · April 9, 2014

    • Armando

I look forward to your review of the DH course.

      April 9, 2014

  • watani

Good luck all and have fun! Trail 50 is my favorite - super fast single track =)

    1 · April 8, 2014

    • Andy U.

Here is what I read: Stage 1 - downhill course - inspection and practice scheduled for Thursday April 10 11:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. Must have your ENDURO race number on your bike to inspect/practice. I cannot believe they are only giving us 1:15 to preview the course.

      April 8, 2014

    • watani

You only 3 runs on the DH course, maybe 4. Just need to remember when to slow down and when you can drop the hammer.

Are either of you signed up for the Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival Enduro Clinic on Sat?

    • Armando

What I meant was on the Friday of SeaOtter.

      March 31, 2014

    • Andy U.

Oh yeah. Duh...I kind of lost track of what day the enduro was run. Yes, definitely. Let's get together. My strong advice is to pre-ride the course if you can.

      March 31, 2014

  • Andy U.

I finished mid-pack at Toro Park. I was within striking distance of first on the more technical run, but I think I am too timid on fast, not so technical stuff.

    March 31, 2014

  • Armando

Andy tell me more about how this Enduro race works? Correct me if I'm wrong from what I've herd. 3 stages and the downhills are timed but the uphills have a time limit. What confuses me is are the 3 stages consecutive with no rest between them or do you get a break between each stage?

    March 8, 2014

    • Andy U.

Watani, There's no chance you have any insight about the enduro course at Toro Park for the end of this month, is there?

      March 19, 2014

    • watani

They put on a downhill/super d race there at toro park and I'm willing to bet that the stages will be the same trails they use for the races.

      March 26, 2014

  • Andy U.

There will be an Enduro race at Toro Park on Sunday. If you want to see how these things work, it might be a good test run. I think I am going to try it (although I am nervous)

    1 · March 24, 2014

    • Armando

I knew you were going to say that.

      2 · March 24, 2014

    • watani

You could watch and learn the format then pre-ride fort ord.

      March 26, 2014

  • Sally

My fiancé Ed is doing to Enduro too, so if you guys go on a test run, let us know. We may want to tag along :).

    March 20, 2014

  • Armando

Have you guys signed up yet? the price is going up on the 24th. I looked at my catagory and it says Open 40-49 men. I'm nervous.

    March 19, 2014

  • Armando

I bit the bullet, I'm all registered. Lord help me!

    2 · March 10, 2014

    • watani

I'll be registering for this too.

      1 · March 11, 2014

  • Armando

I'm contemplating entering this event just for curiosity sake. I'm not really one for racing as I just enjoy exploring trails but I do love to descend.

    1 · February 11, 2014

    • Andy U.

It might be an ideal race for you. The climbs should not be super-competitive because they don't count for your place. As for me, I will be up against higher category riders, so I am just in it for the fun.

SC Mtb Festival has an Enduro clinic if you're interested. http://www.santacruzm...
