Soquel Demo Forest ~ Pre Ride Clinic and Ride!!

  • March 16, 2014 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Meet at the parking lot above the roadside parking area on Highland Way by the yellow gate at 9:00 AM. You will know this is the correct area by the large amount of cars parked with bike racks.

This will be open to all riders who need to learn the basics of doing more technical riding.

RSVPing YES for a ride and not showing will get you moved to the wait list on the next ride you do wish to go on. Please be courteous and drop out early enough to give the more reliable riders a chance to adjust their schedules and attend.

Tires roll at 9:10 AM or sooner if all YES RSVP's are present. Please be there by the meet time, we will leave without you!

Remember, all riders need to be members of Meetup.com & South Bay Mountain Bike Group. Guest are no longer allowed. All riders need to RSVP as a member.

Distance: 1 miles for pre-ride clinic/16 mi for actual ride

Riding time: 2 hours for clinic/1 hour for lunch/4 hours for ride.

Difficulty rating: Intermediate

We will be practicing in the dirt parking lot at Demo.  The skills we will practice are:

*Body position (there is more to it than you might realize)

*Braking (including loading your bike for dramatically shorter braking distances.)

*Turning

*Taking drops (two methods will be taught...low speed and high speed)

*Then we are going to take what we learned and apply them to the trails!

Directions:

Take 17 South toward Santa Cruz. Near the top of 17 take the exit for Summit Road and do a sharp turn to head southeast (you will cross over the highway). Follow Summit Road as it turns into Highland Way in about 5 miles from the freeway exit. Continue down Highland about 5 more miles (about 10 miles from the highway 17 exit) you see a bridge on the right and the signed entrance to the park. A small sign! There is parking on Highland or cross the bridge into the main dirt parking area.

If your not sure where you are going or think you will be late, please leave earlier. It is not fair to have everyone else wait while you get ready to ride. Bring a spare tube and master link?

I will reserve the right to change your RSVP should I feel you're not ready for this ride location or you have been a no show on past rides. RSVP priority will be given to current members in good standing.

***Please remember, a helmet is required for all our rides.***

Safety warning: There have been reports of car break-ins at Demo Forest. On the weekends, it's less likely to occur due to the higher volume of people at the park. However, it's still a good idea to remove valuable stuff from your car prior to going.

Fantastic! I learned a lot at the clinic. The ride was great but I had to cut it short. Ray took a lot of great photos.

Thanks Andy! Awesome instructions that make our rides safer and more fun. And great guided ride to put it to practical use on the Ridge and Sawpit trails for those of us who still had a little energy left after a half-day of practice!
Thanks to Ray and Michelle for the practice photos.

Anny, I just found email that I am on the list today.
Too late to reach, so sorry I did not checking email earlier ( my mistake), and missed the clinic today. My apology to you and to all on the waiting list.

I carry a lot of lumber to these clincs and neither my Fiat or my wife's Mazda 3 can carry it. Anyone with a pickup or SUV want to help me out?

    February 28, 2014

    • DK

Happy to carry it in my van. Andy, just pm me your address/phone.
