The Forest of Nisene Marks

Let's Ride!

We will meet at Epicenter Cycling in Aptos at 11:00 AM.

We will start from there and ride the fireroad to the top of The Forest of Nisene Marks and back down. This will bring us back to Aptos Village just south of the city of Santa Cruz to end at Epicenter Cycling.

Remember, all riders need to be members of Meetup.com & South Bay Mountain Bike Group. Guest are no longer allowed. All riders need to RSVP as a member.

http://www.thatsmypark.org/cp-parks-beaches/the-forest-of-nisene-marks-state-park/

Difficulty rating: Moderate, steady climbs, nontechnical.

Trail surface: well-graded dirt fire road.

Terrain: Shaded second-growth redwood forest through mixed woodlands to the ridge, good views of Monterey Bay.

The climbs are moderate but long. The descents are generally considered intermediate. However as long as you work those brakes you'll be safe.

Bring plenty of water, as well as food, because there is none in the park.

Rain will cancel. I will post a weather update by 8 AM if we need to cancel.

Directions:
Take 17 South toward Santa Cruz and then south on Highway 1.

Exit at the State Park Drive exit from Highway 1.

Turn left on State Park Drive at the traffic light.

Turn right on Soquel Drive. Go 1 mile to Aptos Creek Road.

Turn left on Aptos Creek Road (Aptos Station).

There is parking next to Epicenter Cycling in the dirt parking area on the right.

If your not sure where you are going or think you will be late, please leave earlier. It is not fair to have everyone else wait while you get ready to ride. Bring a spare tube and master link? There is a restroom on site.

***Please remember, a helmet is required for all our rides.***

Wow what ride! Thanks Nancy for your great idea to let us spawn off into little groups - I think that worked out well. That ride back seemed to take FOREVER! Finally those little frozen stubs at the ends of my arms and legs have turned back into useful extremeties:-)

What a ride! The ride uphill was pure enduro but manageable, the ride down via Bacon was epic! While the ~30min or more downhill ride feels eternity, it was exhilarating to ride among the redwoods. I was stoned cold at the end but looking forward to riding it again in the summer. Thanks Nancy!

Everybody made it to Sandy Point -- what a great group! Thanks to all for partnering up and watching out for each other. I had a blast, both on the way up, and on that sweet, smooth descent!

Great endurance ride, uphill was definitely worth flying downhill. An added touch of Bacon brought out the best flavors of the day. Thanks Nancy!

    Great ride

You can do as much or as little of this ride as you want, because it is out-and-back on a fire road, and it's pretty hard to get lost. I'm guessing there will be some people who will want to go all the way to the top, and some who will turn back after they've had enough uphill. So you could time it to make sure you make it back by 3. The nice thing about this ride is that it's all in the pretty redwoods. Hope that helps!

Nancy, how long do you estimate the ride will take? I need to be back in Burlingame by 3pm. Do you think it is realistic? Thanks

Haha, very funny Ray! Yes, we would like to play on the pump track, and riders take instruction from me at their own peril! If anyone really wants to learn this skill, I can provide the name of a great instructor, but it ain't me!

@Nancy, are you going to play on the pump track after the ride? I am sure some would like you to give them a lesson?

Is the ascent similar to wilder ranch's fireroad to enchanted loop or is it more difficult?

    November 4, 2012

  • Ray G

@Grant, why? Just start at the bottom of the fireroad, ride uphill, turn around when at the top or tired and ride down.

Julie, you should do fine on this ride with the trails you have ridden. This is just a mellow ride up the fire road with a great group of people, Nancy is a very good ride leader to go with. You can't really get lost on this one, just let her know at the start you will ride until you are tired and not to wait for you. Most on this ride will take breaks as needed and will ride together. Enjoy, this is another awesome place to ride with South Bay Mountain Bike Group!

Thank you! I've signed up as my first time ride with the group, looking forward to it!

    I don't see a wait list...?

@Grant, The following link will give you a good idea of elevation/distance. The time is subjective and can vary.

Thanks Cleo! I forgot I had a Silicon Valley Bike Exchange workday at the same time. I'll have to do that ride eventually though.

    Ah ok...simply enough.

"moderate but long" didn't give me enough to judge time, distance, or elevation I might subject myself to BEFORE I commit to joining the ride. :)

And I need to plan for the time (driving/riding/driving back to Mtn View). Thanks!

Anyone happen to have a strava or mytracks link for this ride? Or one that's "close enough"? (TIA)
