Soquel Demo Forest

Lets Ride!

This will be an intermediate level group ride.

Meet at the roadside parking area on Highland Way by the yellow gate at 11:00 AM. You will know this is the correct area by the large amount of cars parked with bike racks on the side of the road.

Tires roll at 11:14 AM or sooner if all YES RSVP's are present. Please be there by the meet time, we will leave without you! I plan to do only one loop, you may do more if you wish to.

Remember, all riders need to be members of Meetup.com & South Bay Mountain Bike Group. Guest are no longer allowed. All riders need to RSVP as a member.

Distance: 14 miles

Riding time: 3ish hours?

As organizer, I will reserve the right to change your RSVP should I feel you're not ready for this ride location.

Difficulty rating: Difficult , steady climbs, technically advanced singletrack with plenty of obstacles.

Trail surface: 53 percent dirt road, 34 percent singletrack, and 13 percent paved road.

Terrain: Smooth dirt road through mixed woodlands to the ridge, cool view, singletrack along ragged ridge, steep desent through lush redwoods.

The climbs are moderate but long. The descents are generally considered intermediate/advanced. However as long as you work those brakes you'll be safe.

The plan is to do the Loop. Bring plenty of water, as well as food, because there is none in the park.

Rain will cancel. I will post a weather update by 8 AM.

Directions:
Take 17 South toward Santa Cruz. Near the top of 17 take the exit for Summit Road and do a sharp turn to head southeast (you will cross over the highway). Follow Summit Road as it turns into Highland Way in about 5 miles from the freeway exit. Continue down Highland about 5 more miles (about 10 miles from the highway 17 exit) you see a bridge on the right and the signed entrance to the park. A small sign! There is parking on Highland or cross the bridge into the main dirt parking area.

If your not sure where you are going or think you will be late, please leave earlier. It is not fair to have everyone else wait while you get ready to ride. Bring a spare tube and master link?

***Please remember, a helmet is required for all our rides.***

Safety warning: There have been reports of car break-ins at Demo Forest. On the weekends, it's less likely to occur due to the higher volume of people at the park. However, it's still a good idea to remove valuable stuff from your car prior to going.

@Nancy & Diane, thanks for coming out and enjoying Demo. I just want those that do join us to have a ride that is at their skill level. Isn't this what a good organizer/ride leader should do? Thanks again for the kind words.

Hey Ray, do you like being right? I washed my bike with special attention to the joints, and that scritching noise is gone!

    • Ray G

Good to hear that all it took was a little bike maintenance to take care of the problem. A nice message for a lot of others in the group. :-)

Another awesome South Bay Mountain Bike Group ride with a large group. The trails were in great shape with only a few tree's down along the way. It was nice to see that everyone was able to ride the trails they wanted with 3 different groups. This is how we plan and ride with larger groups which still allows everyone to come out knowing they can have a fun filled day.

Hey everyone, time to update your RSVP if your plans have changed? Remember, this will be an intermediate level group ride. This is still a no drop ride, however I don't expect to do any hand holding as I plan to enjoy my ride as well. We will still take short breaks but I need to get some seat time in. Let's Ride!

    December 7, 2012

Just to remind everyone, this will be an intermediate level group ride & location. Be sure to bring a spare tube. Let's Ride!

Long range weather looks good for this ride, it should be awesome with the South Bay Mountain Bike Group on top of the mountain. Let's Ride!

Another awesome group for Demo, looks like we may do 5 or 6 smaller groups and still have everyone be able to enjoy the trail they want to. Let's Ride!

@Diane, you should do ok here. Let's Ride!

    1 · November 14, 2012

  • Diane

@Ray, it's been suggested I ask you if I can go even though I'm not intermediate, if there are a few others who are interested in going at a slower pace w/ me.

    November 13, 2012

  • Ray G

We always have a large group for Demo. We will ride the road to the Ridge trail head. From there we can divide into a few groups based on what trail everyone wants to do. Last time we had three groups so everyone could do the trail they wanted to do. I just ask that each group has a few riders for safety reasons.

Hey Ray - can you give us the deets on the loop - what trails are we doing?
