China Camp State Park

Lets Ride!

This is always a fun ride.

This ride was on the schedule in November & December but had a rain out.

Our new meeting location is inside the park at the parking/campground/restroom area. Drive into the park off of North San Pedro Road past the ranger booth and follow the paved road to the end. This is also the area where we end each loop. Note: There is now a fee to park of $5 which also includes your required trail use pass.

I am going to plan on doing two loops, however other riders are more than welcome to do only one. The ride is starting later this time, so you may have more traffic heading north and should plan to leave earlier.

Level 2 Ride Rating.

This is taken from my mountain bike guide; China Camp is a wonderful singletrack ride, especially if you're at a time when you're a little out of shape or if you have beginner riders with you. It's the best beginner singletrack ride in the Bay Area. Any other beginner options are either more fire road than singletrack, or have at least a few punishing steep sections in the mix.

http://www.chinacampstatepark.org/

Parking Pass & Trail Use Pass, check the website under Fees & Passes Tab.

Parking Along San Pedro Road
Cars are allowed to park at the side of San Pedro Road; no parking fees are charged as San Pedro Road is a Marin County road. Park users who park along the road but use the trails are required to pay day use trail fees.

This China Camp route is almost completely singletrack and requires almost no advanced climbing stamina or technical skills. While there are a number of technical spots along this ride that would pose difficulty to beginners (and be welcome fun for experienced riders), almost all of them are constrained to the first quarter of the ride, and then things get even easier.

Directions:

From highway 101 north in San Rafael, take the North San Pedro exit east toward the Civic Center. Stay on North San Pedro Road to the park entrance at about 3 miles. There is parking along the road at the entrance to Black Ranch Meadows.

There are restrooms at the campground and water at the trailhead. Arrive early so we can start on time.. You can also park in the paid self parking area. Bring water and be sure your bike is ready to ride.

Tires roll at 11:16 AM or sooner if all YES RSVP's are present. Please be there by the meet time, we don't want to leave without you!

Ride Details
Difficulty as noted in my Mtn Biking guide book is: Moderate, mostly wide and nontechnical single-track trails for beginners. I hear from other riders this is a great place for a good fun ride.

Ray's Ride Rating: On my scale of 1 -5, 1 being easy - this may be a Level 2 Ride.

Remember, all riders need to be members of Meetup.com & South Bay Mountain Bike Group. Guest are no longer allowed. All riders need to RSVP as a member.

Rain will cancel. Check this listing the morning of the ride. I will post by 7 AM a weather update if we need to cancel.

***Please remember, a helmet is required for all our rides.***

Fun ride, and no doubt a super fun group. Some folks asked me how is video quality of the MIVEU POV iphone adaptor I used during the ride. Here is a short video. Judge it yourself. I used it for the first time so I didn't get the angle quite right. Sorry...

As a beginner mountain biker, and my first time on single-track, I must say I had great time, and learned a lot. Great organizers and great group of people, and very accommodating to us "newbies".

  • Diane

by the way, does anyone know the mileage for the 1st loop 2nd group?

    February 10, 2013

    • Collin

Diane, if you were riding with Stephanie, distance should be 8.5 miles. If you were riding with me and Michelle and stayed with me for the extra section at the end, it was 9.75 miles. To see the track, mouse over the graph between mile 8.9 and mile 18.65: http://app.strava.com...

Had a good time and got a much needed workout. Good to see everyone again. Thanks for leading our section, and herding us in the right direction, I'm glad I didn't miss out on that last section.

Darn Ray, I'm set to run that day. Maybe I'll be able to catch up with the group afterwards. Regarding the new fees to use the park, hopefully a good portion of those proceeds actually go back into maintaining the park's facilities and more importantly, the trails and ecosystems.

Been wanting to check this place out, but have kids tourneys all weekend

    February 8, 2013

    • Ray G

That's ok Rick, we will be back many more times this year.

      February 8, 2013

  • Ray G

Just to remind everyone, if you park in the campground area it is $5 which includes the trail use day fee. If you park on the road and ride into the campground/restroom area you will still need to pay the $3 trail use day fee. We will meet and start from the campground/restroom area. Let's be nice to the Friends of China Camp and all pay the $5 fee. This place is worth all of it and then some. Let's Ride!

Ed here, I have room for one passenger and one bike in my truck if someone is looking to carpool. I'm coming from the Willow Glen area in south bay and open to take the 101 or 280 north. I would scoop you up at around 9:30 or so depending your location. E-mail me if your interested, should be a great ride!

I'm super excited for Saturday! This will be my first Meetup ever.

    February 7, 2013

I have a space on my roof bike rack. PM me at [masked] so I can fetch you at 9.30 am if interested. That should give enough time to reach by 11.00 am

    February 7, 2013

  • Daphne C

I am looking for a ride from south bay. Happy to chip in the gas (I am a terrible driver, so...) Let me know if you have extra spot in the car. Thanks! :)

"We will meet at the trailhead by the roadside area." I have never been to this park. Is the actual meet location described obvious to the first-timer?

    Thanks!

    February 6, 2013

    • Ray G

Scott, I have updated the start/meet location.

      February 6, 2013

  • Ray G

Quick note: Since Friends of China Camp now operate the park, there is a Trail use fee of $3 per day. The passes can be paid by card or cash at the entrance. For more info http://www.chinacampstatepark.o...
