Let's Ride!

This ride is for those that are new to Demo, if you're new to mountain biking... this ride location is not for you. Not sure, just ask me.

Gary will lead this ride at a nice mellow pace.

As organizer, I will reserve the right to change your RSVP should I feel you're not ready for this ride location.

Now don't be fooled by what the title says, Demo is not a beginner ride location, but if you've been riding for a while and are comfortable on the bike you'll do ok with us. I have taken many beginner riders to places such as Skegg's and they have done well.

This ride is going to start later in the day because at this time of the year, it will be a bit cold. I would rather ride later when it is a little warmer.

Meet at the roadside parking area on Highland Way by the yellow gate at 11:30 AM. You will know this is the correct area by the large amount of cars parked with bike racks on the side of the road.

Tires roll at 11:46 AM or sooner if all YES RSVP's are present. Please be there by the meet time, we will leave without you! I plan to do only one loop, you may do more if you wish to.

Remember, all riders need to be members of & South Bay Mountain Bike Group. Guest are no longer allowed. All riders need to RSVP as a member.

Distance: 14 tough miles.

Riding time: 3ish hours?

Difficulty rating: Difficult , steady climbs, technically advanced singletrack with plenty of obstacles.

Trail surface: 53 percent dirt road, 34 percent singletrack, and 13 percent paved road.

Terrain: Smooth dirt road through mixed woodlands to the ridge, cool view, singletrack along ragged ridge, steep desent through lush redwoods.

The climbs are moderate but long. The descents are generally considered intermediate/advanced. However as long as you work those brakes you'll be safe.

The plan is to do the Loop. Bring plenty of water, as well as food, because there is none in the park.

Take 17 South toward Santa Cruz. Near the top of 17 take the exit for Summit Road and do a sharp turn to head southeast (you will cross over the highway). Follow Summit Road as it turns into Highland Way in about 5 miles from the freeway exit. Continue down Highland about 5 more miles (about 10 miles from the highway 17 exit) you see a bridge on the right and the signed entrance to the park. A small sign! There is parking on Highland or cross the bridge into the main dirt parking area.

If your not sure where you are going or think you will be late, please leave earlier. It is not fair to have everyone else wait while you get ready to ride. Bring a spare tube and master link?

***Please remember, a helmet is required for all our rides.***

Safety warning: There have been reports of car break-ins at Demo Forest. On the weekends, it's less likely to occur due to the higher volume of people at the park. However, it's still a good idea to remove valuable stuff from your car prior to going.

Great ride yesterday. Here is one more video:
It combines all the trails, so it is bit long.

Another fun ride with SBMBG! It's hard to beat DF. Thanks Ray for all of the great photos. They're the next best thing to being out there right now.

@Leigh, thanks for the great words and advice that everyone in the group should follow "I will quit RSVP'ing for events I can't attend". I could not have said it better and hope to see you back out on the trails soon.

Ray and Gary, can you take more than 11 riders? Any chance to get in. Ziza

    • Ray G

@Ziza, this is Gary's ride and there will be one less leader so I am going to keep it small being a new rider group.

Not looking good. Over committed myself. Boxing at 9-10a tomorrow leaves me with no room for error and likely late. So will have to catch you next time. So sad : (

I'm somehow on both Demo rides. Could you just keep me in the group you think I belong in, and remove me from the other ride? I'm sorry, not sure how that happened! Thanks, Ray.

What trails are you thinking about? Sawpit is pretty sweet in the winter - the dirt seems to drain better on that trail. Corral has a drop that is perfect for beginners (as long as it is dry) because it can be easily lowered and has a nice straight entry.
