Light Painting Workshop

  • November 16, 2013 · 4:00 PM

In my never ending pursuit to improve and share light painting photography, I'd like to do a workshop focused around this medium. Lets have a some fun with long exposures. The goal is trying out new concepts and experimenting with long exposure all while having some fun.

I'll have the usual tools and gadgets such as LED lights, steel wool and more. I will need volunteers as it does get somewhat tiring spinning some of the lights and tools we'll use.

Things that you will need:
Tripod
Cable Release
Camera (with ability to do manual or bulb mode)
Wide Angle Lens
Zoom Lens

I'm limiting this to 12 photographers as i find it easier to work with smaller group. If your bringing a guest don't add them to the count. Just add your self,  I want to be sure we have enough shutterbugs counted.

I'm scouting possible locations for this meetup, suggestions are welcome. It has to be an open area, that is safe as the steel wool is a big concern.

The Beach is always fun and safe

More to come!

Thanks everyone, it was cold and chilly, not much of a sunset but once we got going with the light painting it was interesting. Big thanks to Jeffrey for his assistance with the umbrella, Steve for volunteering spinning the steel wool and providing his own steel wool. And all the rest for hanging around even though I was late. Thanks again and we will do it again soon.

Sorry I have to cancel so close to the event. Blew a torsion bar on the truck today. Maybe this will let me catch up on all the unprocessed pictures sitting on the hard drive. I'll catch the next one.

I'm going to be in Marin on a job and probably won't be able to make it in time, especially with reports about Hwy 17. I'll make room for someone else. Argh! I want to learn this.

If you decide on Santa Cruz, be aware that Hiway 17 traffic will be reduced to one lane each direction beginning at 7pm Saturday to 5am Monday for roadway repairs

How about Shorline in Mountain View....Safe and easy to get to plenty of parking at the Lake and Golf Course , lots of interesting light and the Lake should reflect nicely

I have been there and there is grass and trees, I'm pretty sure the police will be there soon after the wool is ignited.

Although I do agree that it would be a great place for LEDs and flashlights

I would really love it if some of the sites we go to are closer to the south bay - when possible for the purpose of the shoot.

    Hi Erick,

I saw some light painting pictures in front of Palace of Arts, SFO.
    http://www.meetup.com/East-Bay-Photography-Fanatics/photos/18044122/296703742/?a=pu3.2_l#[masked] in some other meetup.

    Shall we consider that option.

Just a thought... Lightpainting works best on a dark night. The date of this meetup is one day before the full moon. We might want to push it back a week or two.

what about on the hill by the cathedral on the hill in san jose. it's literally a parking lot but the cathedral lights up and you have views into the city and around (the less driving and more shooting the better!).

Good suggestion Marion, I've never been there. My biggest concern is safety, if there is dry grass nearby it would not be a good option. I try to avoid any fire hazard which is why I do them near water.
