Scalable Test Automation with Hans Buwalda

Automation is often introduced to improve time to market and deal with large repeated testing efforts efficiently. However, if not done well, automation can become a bottleneck, especially in large and complex projects. Hans will discuss a method called Action Based Testing (ABT) that is based on keywords and modularization to obtain scalability and manageability. After describing this method, Hans will highlight how ABT can work in an Agile project to obtain "sprint+zero": getting working functional tests working before the end of a sprint, rather than postponing automation until a next sprint (known as "sprint+1").

There will be food, refreshments, and prizes including TestArchitect software ($795-$2495 value), a Roku, gift cards, and various best-selling books.

His talk was really nice, however, I couldn't understand Keyword-driven testing completely.

Hi Shunjiro-san, Thanks for the kind comment. Essentially keywords replace the complexity of scripts and programming with a readable/understandable action, like: "add two numbers", or "rent car". The action is a higher level of abstraction so that all the details about how to exactly "rent a car" a hidden so that you can concentrate on test flows and test development instead. Then you can easily build lots of test flows with these actions to get great scalability and test coverage. - John
