South Bay Writers (California Writers Club-South Bay Branch) is an active organization committed to educating and creatively inspiring its broad membership of writers. South Bay Writers was chartered in 1987 by a small group of local writers. Today the group includes members from a range of genres, such as fiction, nonfiction, poetry, journalism, memoir, literary critique, essay, and screenwriting.
South Bay Writers hosts a monthly general meeting featuring an expert speaker on the writing craft, critique groups, weekly open mic readings, as well as workshops, retreats and socials. Membership benefits include participation in the mentoring program “Pathways to Publishing” and opportunities to submit original writing for publication in the California Writers Club "Literary Review" and South Bay Writers’ "Writers Talk", among other benefits.
SBW is one of 19 branches of the California Writers Club. In existence since 1909, the California Writers Club was reportedly conceived by legendary author Jack London and friends. In addition to London, early members included John Muir, Ina Coolbrith and Joaquin Miller.
Monthly general meetings are held at 6 pm on the second Monday of the month at Harry’s Hofbrau, 390 Saratoga Avenue, San Jose, California. Guests and non-members are welcome. The door fee is $15, with $10 applied toward your meal.
We encourage guests to enjoy full benefits of annual membership by signing up online or at the meeting. Annual regular membership fee is $45 with a one-time $20 initiation fee; $20 student annual membership.
