Camping/Bush-walking trip @ Charlie Moreland (2 days)

Let's start Spring season with camping at Charlie Moreland Camping ground situated in Imbil State Forest near Kenilworth. It is a lush green forest and heaven for variety of bird life. Campsite is situated on the bank of Little Yabba Creek ideal for swimming, canoeing, fishing etc. If you can come only for a day trip then join us for a hike to nearby 'Mount Allan' (class 4) on Saturday morning with stunning panoramic views.

How to reach there: Charlie Moreland campground is about 130km (1.50hrs) north of Brisbane. From Bruce Hwy take Steve Irwin Way exit (Tourist drive 24/Beerburrum) and drive up to Railway St, Landsborough. Then turn left to Caloundra St/tourist Drive 23 to Melany. Past Melany town continue on winding Melany-Kenilworth Rd for 32km and then turn left on Sunday Creek Road. Charlie Moreland campsite is about 5km from here. Last 3km is hard gravel road through the beautiful Imbil State forest and can be reached by conventional vehicles.

Alternative access is via the Eumundi–Kenilworth Road, off the Bruce Highway. Kenilworth is about 28 km from the highway. Then take Melany-Kenilworth Rd and turn right on Sunday Creek Road.

(print these directions or enter Sunday Creek Road, Kenilworth in your GPS or check below Google map link for exact directions).

Camp sites are suitable for tent camping beside your car; caravans; camper trailers; (small) motor homes.

Facilities: Water (unsuitable for drinking though), flush toilets, no showers, individual fire rings (BYO clean wood)

Itinerary: We will reach campsite by Friday 11am and setup our tents & communal gathering spot. In the afternoon we can have these easy walks nearby:
1. Fig Tree circuit (750m return - 45min - Class 2)
2. Little Yabba circuit (1.5km return - 45min - Class 3)
3. Piccabeen circuit (3.5km return - 2 hrs - Class 3)

And/or you can go for canoeing, fishing, swimming in the near by creek.

On Sat morning at 9.30am (updated 8.30am) we will wait for those who are coming on that day and then go for Mount Allan hike (8.8km return - 4hrs) which is rated class 4 with some steep sections - general fitness is required. Last section is to climb the stairs of the 9.6 meters fire tower for a splendid 360° views of the surrounding ranges.

On Sunday we will break our camp around midday and head home.

Essential to bring: enough drinking water (for cooking and hiking as only rain water is available for general washing), food & snacks for your stay, gas stove, tent, warm & water proof sleeping gear (it can be very cold in the forest even in spring), Fire Wood, your medicine and first aid kit, camera, Rubbish bags, insect repellent, printed camping tag or booking number, fun and relaxing attitude. Attendance was huge, about 50 people from different groups. A very good weather all around. Enjoyed the good company, walks, waterfall run, campfire conversation, damper, swimming etc. Thanks all those who attended and made it very interesting weekend.

Hi Jenny, did you book your campsite on-line or by phone? By phone they should have given you a booking number which is just enough - you can bring that along and fill in the blank camping tag that is available from information board at the campsite. If booked online then you can either print the tag from your account or just bring along the booking number. See you there.

Hi all attendees, I have just sent you an email with trip details, general itinerary and how to find me at the camp. If you don't receive it in reasonable time please check your junk folder because sometime email from this system ends up there. Hope to see you there. Cheers

Park Alert: Mt Allan fire tower closed
During a routine inspection of the fire tower some decay was found in one of the supporting posts. The tower is unsafe to climb and will be closed until repaired. The walking track to the tower will remain open.

The Conondale Range Great Walk will also remain open through this section.

Hi this will be my first venture with this group and I was wondering if the 11am time is when you meet there? or just any time after that?
I haven't been camping for years and will have to restock all the stuff any suggestions where to but apart from Ebay?

    August 5, 2013

    • Brij

Jenny, come anytime on Friday, just take it easy. Closer to date I will sendout message how to find the group. Camping stuff - often you can find good deals at local camping shops/Kmart/BigW and if it doesn't come out good then you can return them much easier than ebay. Start with simple and evolve as you go. For us it is never perfect, we are still forgetting things after 15 years of camping. But check 'Essential to bring' list in the event blurb closely. Ask here or send me email if you have any query. See you there.
