HIKING/PICNIC AT SOUTH MOUNTAIN (**Postponed to March 9 due to weather**)!

**IMPORTANT UPDATE (2/28; 2PM):  THIS EVENT IS POSTPONED TO NEXT SUNDAY, MARCH 9, DUE TO WEATHER THIS WEEKEND.  MEETUP IS SAME PLACE AND SAME TIME (8:30AM).  FORECAST FOR NEXT WEEK IS CLEAR AND WARMER.   (Sorry, folks, for late notice but Meetup website was down until now).**

LET'S ALL TAKE A HIKE! South Mountain Park/Preserve is one of valley's natural wonders we have to see and appreciate. If taking an early morning hike (relatively easy 2.5 miler) with 360-degree panoramic views of Phoenix and South Valley as well as walking thru our local desert hills and valleys is appealing to you, then come join us! Just yesterday, I scoped out the Pima Canyon Trailhead section of the the Park and found it to be readily accessible from main roads, the hike route was gradual and easy. The first mile is a trek uphill and very quickly the views of South Valley capture your senses. Then at top of second hill, one can enjoy the 360degree view of the entire Valley of the Sun. The rest of the trail is mostly downhill and descends to a pleasant walk through a shallow wash through scrub trees and cactus. Beautiful!
(See attached pictures). Oh, did I mention that park access is FREE?

DETAILS:
1) I could use 2 or 3 volunteers to help me in set-up and food and hiking group leads.
2) Hike promptly begins at stated time (8:30am); no stragglers, please... (Suggest arrive at Trailhead 15 minutes before for headcount).
3) Wear appropriate hiking attire (sturdy shoes, very light sweater for early coolness, headgear and sunglasses).
4) Brunch picnic will take place after everyone arrives from hike (approx. 10am).
5) We plan to wrap things up at about 12noon - 1:00pm.

6) Comments and suggestions welcome!

7)  There is no charge for this hike (FREE); however, everyone is encouraged to bring a dish for the Potluck Brunch.  Please indicate when you RSVP.

The weather was 10 out of 10 - Excellent. Bright sunshine with cool morning breeze when we first started at 9am made for a nearly smogless hike. Temperature was about 68 - 74degrees from start to finish. Great day was had by all.

Hi folks! ***UPDATE as of 2/28 - 2pm):
    1) I just update this event's page to reflect a postponement due to weather and safety. Pls read above.
    2) New date is next Sunday, March 9.
    3) Same time and same place (see above).

FYI - I did a dry-run hike last Saturday of our route again and wanted to express that it IS a relatively easy hike, perfect for first-time hikers. Taking my time, taking pictures of the great views and of the wildflowers now in spring bloom, and liesurely sauntering back to the trailhead, it took less than 2hrs.

Pls attend next week, it's a good time to be on the mountain (hill, actually...)! Also hoping that we get other RSVPrs for next week.

Hi folks! ***Update as of 3/07 - 8:30pm***
    1) Looks like great weather for our Sunday morning Hike! To date there are approx. 21 members who have signed up for event.
    2) The Picnic will be held after the hike at one of the ramadas at the Trailhead entrance/parking area. Look for "SEVFAF" sign on top of table.
    3) So far only three have indicated their food items for the PICNIC. If you have not done so, please jump in on this conversation and let us know.
    4) Plan to arrive at least 15minutes early (8:15am) so we can do headcount before the climb.
    5) For the hike, don't forget to bring: a bottle (or 2) of water, headgear, sunglasses, sunscreen lotion, and camera for pictures!
    6) See you there!

Hi folks: Update for those planning to attend Hiking Event:

    1) REMINDER that Hiking/Picnic is coming up this next Sunday March 2. 2) **IMPORTANT!** Please note that START time has changed from 7:30am to 8:30am (less chill & more sun). 3) WEATHER ALERT! News forecast is predicting wind & rain for this Saturday and Sunday. Be advised that if rain does occur, we will postpone event until following Sunday, March 9. Bottom line: No Hiking if mountain is wet! I will update next Thursday and Friday...

    4) My cell phone # is (408) 710-9385. Call or text me if needed.

    5) POTLUCK MENU: Please let me know what you plan to bring/share to Potluck. Since it is early lunch, I suggest a lighter menu, i.e. breakfast or light picnic items (sandwiches, snacks, etc). Location of picnic will be at picnic tables at Trailhead entrance.

    6) I will be bringing a dozen bagels w/ham, scrambled egg & cheese. Also, paper plates, plastic utensils, cups & napkins. All for now...

I've heard from some members that the start time is too early, also may interfere with Sunday church. Since it's early March, weather should be OK for later start. Please let me know asap if a later start time (say 11am) will enable you to attend.
