Agile Book Club

Want to learn more about agile & Scrum but don’t have much time? Looking for peers to study with? A community of fellow practitioners to ask questions and grow our skill sets together?

Look no further than our brand new SFAA Agile Book Club,
kicking off the last week of May at Carecloud (thanks Dave!).

How it works:

1) Mark our first meeting on your calendar - Weds May 29, 7 pm.
2) Borrow, buy, or rent our first book club selection -
Succeeding with Agile: Software Development Using Scrum
by Mike Cohn
3) Read Part 1 (chapters 1-5). Jot down your questions & comments on index cards.
4) Join us at CareCloud by 7 pm sharp, on Weds May 29.
5) We’ll break the ice with a quick game, discuss chapters we’ve read, share questions and ideas. Then as a group, we’ll decide what to read next and when to meet again. We’ll end sharply by 8:15!
6) Keeping it simple, so eat before coming :) BYO-everything (drink, book, and cards).

All are welcome, from the curious about agile to newbies to seasoned Agilists willing to share what they’ve learned and help build up our South Florida Agile community.

About our first book selection -

“Mike Cohn has done it again. Succeeding with Agile is based on his experience, and all of our experience, with agile to date. He covers from the earliest days of the project up to maturity and offers advice for the individual, the team, and the enterprise. No matter where you are in the agile cycle, this book has something for you!”

I really enjoyed the book club. The book you selected is great and the people I meet so smart and experienced. I was learning so much in one hour of discussion that I didn't want it to end. Thank you for making this book club possible. I am looking forward our next meet up :).

Really interesting discussions, some of which took surprise directions :) Great to hear other perspectives around the topics and ideas raised by the author. It was great to have both seasoned agilists with lots of relevant experience and newbies with interesting questions. Looking forward to where this book club adventure takes us in July. Will post next book club meetup shortly :) Thanks to one and all!

This is the first time I've participated in any type of book club and admittedly, I my expectations of enjoying the experience was low going in. Much to my pleasant surprise I thoroughly enjoyed the experience! I read a book loaded with experience and techniques and discussed with smart, like-minded folks. Most importantly, I learned new things I can apply immediately!

Was great! Liked the approach and results. Good people and excellent, valuable topics. This is really helpful for anyone going through the transition now or contemplating adoption of something beyond waterfall.

Agile with a chance of rain tonight :) Folks, we hope you come out wherever you are in the reading. We value your input and questions over comprehensive coverage of the selected reading. See you tonight!

You can get alot from this book reading on your own too. Feel free to post questions or thoughts about the book here also. There are other book groups and lean coffee sessions north that you might want to check out. If there is enough interest, we could also consider a virtual book club down the road.

Great quote from chapter 2 of the book... "I visualize Scrum as a rocket. Pushing that rocket forward is the power of its engines. But pulling it back are the forces of gravity... The implications of Scrum must be pushed far enough into other parts of the organization so that the entire transition is not pulled back by organizational gravity." Then Mike Cohn summarizes 15 years of experience with all sorts of Scrum launches, what he's seen work, not work, fail, etc. Good stuff, great advice on the harder stuff, practical too.

Great. I heard Citrix also has a book club. The more, the merrier.
Meeting at CareCloud should make it easy for Miami folks and maybe South Broward.
