PLEASE NOTE: This meetup happens on a different day of the month than normal.
For September we moved the meetup to a different day than our normal meetups because Derick Rethans of 10Gen will be visiting us from UK to talk about MongoDB.
MongoDB is a scalable, high-performance, open source, document-oriented NoSQL database. It features document-oriented, JSON-based document storage and dynamic schemas providing simplicity, power and flexibility, combined with full indexes similar to what a traditional RDBMS user would expect. MongoDB also provides solid replication & high availability features as well as an auto-sharding system for transparent horizontal scalability. This talk introduces MongoDB for developers who aren't familiar with it with a detailed introduction of how to work with MongoDB from PHP.
The talk will cover the basics from installing the PHP driver and connecting to mongoDB to creating, inserting, querying for, and updating documents. We will also briefly touch on aggregation, geospatial indexes, GridFS and running database commands.
The folks at 10gen have also supplied us a ton of swag for the meeting: books, books, books, shirts, stickers, and more books! If you're looking to learn about MongoDB, this is one you'll not want to miss!
Derick Rethans (@derickr) is a PHP Engineer/Evangelist at 10Gen (the company behind MongoDB), maintainer of the PHP driver for MongoDB and has contributed in a number of ways to the PHP project, including the Xdebug debugging tool, the mcrypt, date and input-filter extensions, bug fixes, additions and leading the QA team. He’s a frequent lecturer at conferences, the author of php|architect’s Guide to Date and Time Programming, and the co-author of PHP 5 Power Programming, and an OpenStreetMap and mapping enthusiast and contributor.
Derick also works as an independent contractor doing various PHP related jobs while focussing on internals and extensions. In his spare time he likes to travel, hike, ski and practice photography.
Awesome chance to talk with one of the premiere PHP devs of our day. Did I mention the free drink at the Ale house after?
