The Bean Trees, by Barbara Kingsolver

This summer renowned author, Barbara Kingsolver, has a new novel out, called "Flight Behavior." But it is also the 25th anniversary of the first book, "The Bean Trees." To celebrate, we will be reading this fun, yet poignant debut novel as our July pick. Please join us!

In the Bean Trees, protagonist Marietta Greer, spent her childhood in rural Kentucky determined to do two things: avoid getting pregnant and escape rural Kentucky. At the start of the novel she has headed west in a beat-up '55 Volkswagon. By the time two tires give way in Tucson, she has with her a stunned, three-year-old Cherokee girl who was, literally, dropped into her arms one night...

I wasn't able to attend the meeting, but I read the book. I thought it was an excellent read. Hoping to meet everyone soon.

Thanks so much for having me! I'd never read any of Kingsolver's books before, but now I'm hooked. In fact, another Kingsolver fan lent me a copy of The Poisonwood Bible and I've already made a major dent in that!

More than half way through the book, and it gets better and better. This will be my first meetup with the group. Looking forward to the discussion.

I just found this group, and I read the book a couple of years ago, but it will be fun to reread. I like Barbara Kingsolver's books, i just purchased "Flight Behavior" last week, but haven't started it yet. I just found "The Bean Trees" on my bookshelf, so I'm set. I look forward to my first meeting with this group.

I just bought the book this past weekend. I'm roughly 50 pages in, and I'm loving it!

I've never read it, but I just picked it up at Barnes & Noble (the one behind the Rt. 70 Wegmans) this afternoon. I "cheated" by reading the first page and a half, but I'm going to finish Death in the City of Light first.

I'm a newbie who just stumbled onto this group through a cross link with a restaurant club. I'm an avid reader, but it will be fun to add a bit of "structure" to my reading list! I'm in the final third of "Death in the City of Light" right now, and yes, I'm afraid I'm reading the "dead tree edition!"

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
