IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:
From May 23rd to August 27th, I will be in China furthering my own kung fu studies at Wudangshan. The group will not have any official meetings, but resources will be posted in the discussions pages for anyone interested in keeping up with the exercises. I encourage you to have a healthy and satisfying summer, and to keep up your practice while I am out of the country!
Our members meet up to accomplish the following goals:
1. Learn the fundamentals of Taijiquan and the martial arts, in general
2. Maintain a consistent Tai Chi/Taiji practice
3. Increase our capacity for physical, mental, and spiritual health
The South Jersey Health & Wellness Tai Chi will be a group that learns contemporary Yang Style Tai Chi, also known as Taiji. This is primarily an exercise group, so a typical session will consist of stretching, breathing exercises, balancing exercises, light strength training, taiji forms, and a cooldown. In keeping with the taoist principles upon which taiji is founded, there will also be some traditional kung fu exercises to balance the "soft" forms with some "hard" movements. For each meetup, it is recommended you wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing. You should also bring water or a sports drink so you can stay hydrated.
This program has been created for the purpose of sharing Taiji with the public and increasing the instructor's hours of weekly training in preparation for a pilgrimage to China in the summer of 2011. The money collected at the end of each class will be used to help fund this trip. Upon his return, the teacher hopes to have many new and wonderful things to share with his students. To this end, the instructor requests $10 per class. Special considerations can be discussed if you are having financial troubles.
The nature of Taiji is slow and methodical. You set your own boundaries in this class, and it is understood that each person exercises at their own level. In this way, Taiji is approachable for any individual of any fitness level. For students looking for greater challenges, elements of Chen Style and other internal martial arts will be introduced within the context of the Yang Style forms.
The wushu component of the club is a vigorous practice that builds athleticism within the context of chinese martial arts. Students develop dynamic flexibility, endurance, and explosive power. In the winter, it is recommended that you bring a change of clothes so that you will not be driving home in damp clothing.
About the instructor: Steve Donahue is a senior student of Master Li, Pei Yun in Sewell, NJ. He has studied Taiji and several other martial arts over the past 9 years. While his martial arts journey is still just beginning, he strives to follow in the footsteps of his teachers and share the tremendous benefits of Taiji with anyone that has an interest.
