The Month of LOVE- Making Beautiful Music Together, Jamming!

Hi, SPAMER JAMMERS!

February is the traditional month of LOVE- and so the thematic arises*, which should be no problem at all, since oh, so many songs are written about Love. You Love 'em, you get 'em, you lose 'em, you find 'em just in the nick of time... you get the drift...

Please bring: Your musical instrument &/or your golden voice, "Munchies" &/or drinks to share at the break, music to share**, and at least a buck for the kitty (donation) to help with Meetup costs.

This is a very inclusive group, musically speaking, so if you have an oldie but goodie or brand new, hot off the press: rock, soul, jazz, folk, or original, bring it on!

Thanks everyone, for making this an incredible group, and we'll see 'ya at Doug and Linda's pad!

Cheers,

Nora

* (Thematics are NOT "mandatory" in the group, however, but it does provide an impetus to learn new songs).

** Contact Doug well beforehand if you have music you want displayed on the monitor at his home when you come, if you have the time to do so. Otherwise, it's cool to make copies for a few other folks who would like to see the music or lyrics. The old fashioned way at many jams is just to play along as you hear it, but it is nice to help others along if 'ya can.

This truly just keeps getting better 'n better. A home away from home. A place where you can try things out within a safe, trusting, supportive group. Sacred.

Not sure who can play these songs w/ for me- not sure I have time to work 'em out before today, but if anyone's got a handle on 'em, I'd be much obliged: "Today", by Jefferson Airplane: http://www.azchords.com/j/jeffe... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=...

Next song, "Comin' Back to Me", Jefferson Airplane: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=...

    music: http://www.guitaretab.com/j/jef...

(but we'd need Dave Gilman's flute on this one!)

    Those are two of my very favorite songs. Those and Wichitaw Lineman. :*}

    February 24, 2013

    • Nora

Wow! Cool on Lineman! Gentle on my Mind is sweet!

      February 24, 2013

    • Nora

(I figured out Comin' Back to Me this morning; not sure how swift I'll be, but it's worth a try!)

      February 24, 2013

  • Nora

This morning, I have figured out the plucking guitar part for "Comin' Back to Me", by Jeff/ Airplane (on their first album). I hope I can get Dave on flute for this one- or if anyone else knows the part! I have scanned in my hieroglyphics on tab guitar for this; will try to upload a PDF of it to files. Crossed fingers!

Just one more thing (why do I feel like Peter Falk in Columbo?)...if time and the singing circle process permit, I'm also bringing one new original, the first written since I attended Wintersongs songwriting camp. It's a love song called "The Turtle."

O.K, Morey, I've got something for YOU: Alicia Key's "If I Ain't Got You". I just figured out the guitar part, and here is a link to the piano: http://www.scribd.com/doc/17474...

    Are you game?

For Nora and Morey... I just found and loaded the complete "If I Ain't Got You" piano score in PDF format to the MORE/FILES tab. Richard

P.S: Note the change in the group title. Originally, the person who'd started this group, lived in S. Pasadena. We thought SPAMers was a funny name, so we kept it, semi lazy artist types that we are. Someone joined the group who lives in S. Pas recently (it had to happen!)- so I've changed the group name title and the originally placed zip code to Doug's zip, where we have most of our jams, so it won't be confusing. Notice I've kept the acronym, SPAMers in the title? It makes no sense but it's our legacy as spammer jammers, so what the heck!

    • Morey W.

Hi Nora. This Sunday, I'm wondering if I could twist your arm to take the lead on "Your Cheatin' Heart"? If so, please select what key, and we'll go with that. Thanks, Morey

      February 22, 2013

    • Nora

Hi, Morey- You do not have to twist my arm for that one! I believe "C" is a good key for me, thanks! It'll be fun!

      February 22, 2013

  • Jay S.

Morey, I love your song selections. I'm looking forward to doing my version of Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" in D, (see earlier post below) that is influenced by Spencer Bohren's slow mournful rendition with lapsteel guitar, as well as having chance to back up your rendition in C. I would like you to take an instrumental break on mine, either on piano or guitar. Williams' "Your Cheatin' Heart" is one of my earliest childhood memories of Hank Williams from the mid-50s -- thanks for bringing these to the session. See you Sunday.

    February 22, 2013

    • Morey W.

Thanks Jay. I should have read that you were planning to sing "Lonesome." Please take the lead on "Lonesome" (in D), and I'll do a verse on the piano. I will attempt to get Nora to sing "Your Cheatin" Heart" in whatever key works best for her. See you soon!

      February 22, 2013

  • Morey W.

If time permits, here are a few songs I'd like us to play:
    - Going Back to the Blue Ridge Mountains (G)
    - Greenville Trestle (D)
    - I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (C)
    - Your Cheatin' Heart (A).
I will bring copies with lyrics/chords.

    February 22, 2013

    • Jonathan B.

Isn't that "Yor Cheatin' Hart"? ;-)

      1 · February 22, 2013

  • Jay S.

I'm adding two more favorite folk songs, "I'll Fly Away" in D, and "Keep On the Sunny Side" in A, both from the soundtrack album from "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"

    February 21, 2013

  • Jay S.

So happy that I'm now confirmed for Sunday's SPAMmers Jam. I'll be doing a favorite Hank Williams tune, "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" in D, and Woody Guthrie's "Plane Wreck at Los Gatos" (AKA "Deportee") in D. I'll send chart files to Doug for the big screen. See you all Sunday.

    1 · February 19, 2013

  • Jonathan B.

I'm going to bring/play "Make You Feel My Love" (the Garth Brooks version, not the Bob Dylan original) and my favorite Jim Croce love song...no, NOT "Time in A Bottle," but...."Roller Derby Queen."

    February 18, 2013

  • Melanie P.

Hey all of you are so organized, it's impressive! I'll bring guitar and recorder along and I'm looking at a beautiful song- Fields of Gold by Sting- not sure what key I'll play it in yet. Looking forward to it! Oh my husband will not be able to attend so maybe that will open up another seat. Melanie

  • Nora

I am planning on working to create a second jam, hopefully, each month. People like to get in more than a couple songs at a jam, so too large a number becomes unwieldy... I will start a second jam at my house as of next month- with Doug's house the main ongoing jam, as he's got the larger pad. Mine's in Sunland. So hope to see more of you able to get in on jams starting next month! Note that I stayed on the waiting list 'til a spot opened up too last month- although as organizer, I should be able to attend, I suppose. Just thought it more right to wait like everyone else. We might squeeze in a few more- those who find they can't go, PLEASE revise your r.s.v.p! Stay posted up to 'day of'- thanks for your patience...

    February 18, 2013

  • greg d.

Hope there is space this weekend. I couldn't get in last month due to the waiting list.

    February 18, 2013

  • Douglas K.

For the February jam I'm planning to play "Lady Madonna" in the key of A by the Beatles. I'll be playing piano. It would be nice to have harmony voices, rhythm, bass.

    February 17, 2013

    • Jonathan B.

I can handle rhythm, maybe some harmony.

      February 17, 2013

  • Jonathan B.

This is gonna be my first time at a SPAM event. I know, and have the lyrics/chords, at least some of songs I'll bring along to share. Should I just bring copies and, if so, how many? Or send to Doug? Will also be at East Bay Hoot tomorrow if any of you are going to be there.

    February 16, 2013

  • Jay S.

I really enjoyed my first time making songs with you all last month, and was so disappointed to land on the wait list for this one. I see I've moved up to No. 1 on the waiting list now, and will keep my hopes up for another RSVP cancellation.

    February 16, 2013

  • Don B.

Well, this is a bummer - I responded as soon as I received a notice that the meeting was posted and I'm number five on the waiting list.

    February 9, 2013

    • Richard B.

Don, Being co-organizer I would expect you to be there to help Nora organize. Richard

  • Jeannie W.

Had SO much fun with you guys last time, too! So sorry about that! And, Morey, I so wanted to play something with you. Well, I hope to be able to come to the next one for sure and will definitely want to try a song with you then. Til then, have a great one everybody! Hugs, Jeannie

    February 8, 2013

    • Morey W.

Thanks Jeannie. Glad to know that you have a gig on that date, but sorry that I will miss your singing and playing. By the way, I would enjoy accompanying you at one of the sessions. However, I would feel far more comfortable doing so if I had a chart with lyrics and chord in front of me. Otherwise, I am naturally quite constrained because I would not want to get in your way. So I will leave it to your time and interest to define a tune with charts, and send it to me in advance of the next session. Til then! - Morey

Hey Doug- Maybe my husband will come- he is great with jamming on his harmonica-I'll find a love song to share - thanx -ms Melanie

I can't believe this filled up in a matter of hours! I'm glad that we have some new folks joining us- Just those of you who change plans, even at the last minute- please adjust your r.s.v.p.- the wait list is on automatic setting when spots open up. As well, those of you on the wait list- don't lose hope- stay in touch w/ the site near 'time of'. This has apparently become a pretty hot meetup, folks! I think in March, I will start up a double jam- meaning, a small one at my house in Sunland, and the bigger one at Doug's. Thanks for your participation and patience!
