As we drum together we create a natural, communal rhythm. Our group intention is the restoration of natural earth rhythms, for ourselves as individuals, and for the planet. We drum for the health of the living earth. The circles are scheduled to coincide with the new and full moons, giving us the opportunity to align ourselves with planetary cycles.

Following are answers to FAQ about drum circles.......

What is a drum circle? A drum circle is a group of people facing each other in a circle, each playing a drum or other percussion instrument. Participants may be musicians, but no prior musical training or experience is needed. We gather together in order to enjoy each other’s company, while creating a lively mix of rhythm and sound.

How does a drum circle work? Some drum circles are completely improvised by the participants, while others are lead by a facilitator who offers guidance and structure. Sometimes we each play what comes naturally, while at other times we join forces to follow a predetermined pattern of play. My facilitation style involves some improvisation and some structure, and my style changes for different kinds of groups.

What are the instruments like? I have collected drums and percussion instruments from all continents. Most are not authentic folk instruments, but are inspired by the traditional drums of many cultures. They are manufactured for sound quality and durability. In addition to drums, my collection includes bells, scraper, shakers, and specialty items. Sometimes melody instruments or singers contribute.

What rhythms are used? The purpose of Lubdub drum circles is to create our own rhythms, while feeling free to borrow rhythms from other parts of the world. Many rhythms are culturally specific, while others are more universal. I chose the name Lubdub because it is the sound of the beating heart, the most universal rhythm of all.

Why do we form drum circles? To add healthy rhythms to our lives! The sounds are fascinating, and the feeling of rhythm moving through our bodies is energizing. Drum circles are a terrific social event, helping people to know each other better in a fun, relaxing environment. Recent studies have shown that group drumming can build self confidence, lessen depression, increase concentration, help build listening skills, and aid in handling stress.

Lubdub Drum Circles are appropriate for many settings. They are offered as school enrichment programs, as social events for youth groups and retirement communities, and as activities for religious and civic organizations meetings. They are effective tools used in healing and meditation groups, and for corporate teams. They also make a great addition to family reunions and wedding receptions.

This circle is timed for the eleventh new moon of 2009.

The time of the new moon can be used as a time to invite newness into our lives. This time when the moon is dark can be used to acknowledge the hidden parts of ourselves.

At 7:30 we will set group intentions and then drum for the health of the earth and all who live on it.

At 9:00 we will close the circle.
