We haven't done this in nearly 1.5 year and never in spring! At this time of year we should see lots of wildflowers. We pass thru chaparral and even redwoods. The scenery on the way down is sweeping views of Monterey Bay and the Pacific.
The only downside to this hike is ticks.
Distance: 9 miles
Elevation change: 1000 feet
Route: we will take Long Meadow Trail up and Eucalyptus Loop back. There are many criss-crossing trails, so the route back may be different.
Driving directions: from Los Gatos it should take you 45 minutes.
Hwy 17 to Santa Cruz.
Right-hand exit to Hwy 1 - follow signs to Half Moon Bay.
Drive along Mission Street for about 3 miles to the edge of town (traffic llight at Western Drive).
Continue approx. 1.8 miles, looking for Wilder Ranch signs. A left turn takes you into the park. You have to pay ($8 now?). The parking lot is obvious.
Before you reach the road into the park you will see many cars parked on the south side of Hwy 1. You can park here if you choose not to support our state parks. Then find the pedestrian tunnel that goes under Hwy 1 and walk back to the parking lot.
CARPOOL: 8:00 A.M. sharp at the Los Gatos Park and Ride. From Highway 17, exit on Saratoga/Los Gatos Road and go two blocks. The park and ride is just past University Avenue (but before Santa Cruz Ave.) on the right. Give yourself plenty of time to find the park and ride if you haven't been there before.. Plan on arriving around 7:55 p.m. to secure your ride as drivers are punctual. 10 cents per mile suggested carpool rate for the driver.
Lunch: we will go to Kelly's for lunch afterward, unless it is raining. We went there 1.5 years ago. Hwy 1 back to town; right on Swift Street, left on Ingalls.
