EAST PEAK MT TAMALPAIS

We'll start at the Pantoll Ranger Station and head up to the Mountain Theater, walk past the rows and rows of rock bench seats, and up to West Point Inn. There are restrooms here, as well as an honor system snack table inside. On a clear day, the views are hard to forget. We'll continue uphill on Old Railroad Grade for 1.5 miles to East Peak, where there are more restrooms and a small visitors center, and take the short climb up to the closed fire lookout for some of the Bay Area's best views. Once we've had enough of the awesome scenery, we'll retrace our steps to West Point Inn, then continue down to Pantoll on Old Stage Rd.

Approx 9 miles round trip

Approx 1300 ft elevation change

DIRECTIONS: cross the Golden Gate Bridge and take the CA 1/Mill Valley/Stinson Beach exit. It will curve left and take you back under the freeway, then curve right to the intersection with Almonte. Go left (this is CA 1). At about 2.5 miles, go right on Panoraminc Highway. After almost 1 mile, continue on the middle fork (straight) and go another 4.5 miles to the Pantoll Ranger Station and parking lot on your left.

Beautiful views and plenty of trees to provide shade. Very interesting stop at the historical "railway station". Thanks Marcia !

Anybody interested in carpooling from the 280/Page Mill carpool lot? Meet there at 8AM.

Jean, have 3 passengers already. Could fit a 4th, but it'll be rather tight in the back. We can decide on Saturday or perhaps someone else will be at the park and ride.

the Minaret hike wasn't as bad as Glenn's topo map showed! This is nothing like that...your mom should be fine. If she did the hike to Stinson Beach and up the Dipsea trail with the ladder-I think this is easier...

Thank you! But I am such an idiot, I forgot that I got tickets for them to go to MI to meet their new granddaughter that week, so she won't be here.

I consider it a standard Rambler hike...the only part that may be hard is the last short climb to the fire lookout. It's not long or steep, but full of rocks...

    • Kitty

so elevation change is gradual, like the last hike at Minaret?

You think this is a difficult hike? Thinking if my mom can do it?

Lovely! Another hike I'll love to do when I return. Thx. Marcia.

I'll have to consult my hiking book at home, but a map on the web shows it to be probably a little more that 1000 gain...

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
