You'll get to see the beautiful Castle Rock and the Castle Rock Falls and also enjoy some beautuful views along the way. Its a nice blend of flats and climbs where you can enjoy the hike and all it has to offer without being getting overly exhausted. There's a reason why this park was nominated one of California's lovely State Parks!!. This is one of my favorite hikes in the area and it is a very enjoyable hike.

About Castle Rock State Park: Castle Rock State Park emcompasses over 5,200 acres of wildlands in the Santa Cruz Mountains. There are 35 miles of hiking trails, interesting rock formations and fabulous views of the San Lorenzo Valley and Pacific Ocean. Other activities include backpacking, horseback riding and rock climbing. Park hours are from 6:00 a.m. to dusk.

Hike description: On this hike we'll make an approximately 8 mile loop stating at the Saratoga Gap Trail from the main park headquarters. The hike will begin with a wvisit to the spectacular 3,214 foot Castle Rock, the parks main attraction, which is located just 3/10 mile from the parking lot. Here you can walk around the rocks and explore the many nooks and crannies of the rocks. From there we'll continue on another 0.8 miles to Castle Rock Falls which is approximately 80 feet high and fed by the headwaters of Kings Creek. We'll then continue on the Saratoga Gap Trail passing through beautiful chaparral and superb views along the way. After the campsite we'll connect to the Loghry Woods Trail which will connect us to Highway 35 where we'll cross over into Sanborn Park. We'll end the hike with a walk along the Skyline Trail in Sanborn Park which will take us back to the Castle Rock Parking lot. The total loop will take approximately 3.5 hours to do.

Carpool:  4th Street in Saratoga at 8:00 a.m.  parking lot is located behind the Plumbed Horse restaurant.  Turn right on 4th from Highway 9 and you will see it on the left hand side.

Castle Rock was a repeat of my very first hike with Dawn and The Ramblers! Thank you, Dawn and All, for the many wonderful hiking adventures! 1% wind, rain, and snow...then 99% gorgeous days for terrific group and hiking experiences!

Lots of shaded woods walkthrough. Somewhat flat walking trail. Care less for the noise from Gun club.

Beautiful view along the trail, mostly shaded. Not so easy because of the climbing on the rocks but good work out ! Thanks, Dawn !

Jeff, it's actually the skyline ridge tradition but if there's enough interest a lunch should be in order. I can't do lunch myself as I'm going on a farm tour afterwards but you and others should go. Anybody else want lunch?
