Montara Mountain (McNee Ranch State Park)

  • Aug 2, 2014 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Description:

Rising almost 2,000 feet above the beaches of Pacifica, here is where the sun often breaks through the clouds. Even when the sun continues to hide, there’s still a chance that by the time we hike to the summit we'll be hiking above the clouds. Montara mountain (also called McNee Ranch) is part of Montara State Beach. The mountain is a northern spur of the Santa Cruz Mountains and features the only undisturbed Coastal Mountain Habitat with over 100 miles of coastline.

We will start from the Graywhale Cove State Park trailhead, which is 4.8 miles from the Summit of Montara Mountain.  Elevation gain is 1,898ft, but the views are spectacular!  The total hike will be 9.6 miles.

Directions to Trailhead:  Take 280 North to Highway 92 towards  Half Moon Bay then take Highway 1 North to the San Mateo Coast, north of Montara on U.S. Highway 1. The only available automobile parking is on the east side of the highway, which is where the trailhead starts.

Carpool:  The best carpool location is the Arastradero Park and Ride near 280 in Palo Alto.  Volunteer drivers will be needed.  Meet at 8:00 a.m.

Optional Lunch Afterwards: http://www.camelotfishandchips.com/index.html.  Most authentic fish & chips in the Bay Area.

Other:  Dress in layers as this mountain creates weather and we never know what it is going to be 2,000 feet up; right on the ocean.

I will be the sweep and the leader!

There is a larger parking lot down the road - this is where we will begin the hike -  the other lot holds about four or five cars and that is too small.

Bathroom:  There is no bathroom so please make sure you stop in Montara before coming to the parking lot.

Note:  This is a moderately strenuous hike with almost 2000' gain in elevation.

Nice to see some familiar faces, and new (to me) ones today! The view of the entire Bay Area under the fog from up too was outstanding!

There are three of us waiting at the gray whale cove trailhead, did we somehow miss you?

Looks like the Park and Ride is the Page Mill Road exit on the west side of 280 at Arastradero Road? Fish and chips sounds good!

Hi Jeff- I have to back up on carpooling since I might head to S.F. right after the hike. I look forward to carpooling with you in the future. Thank you, Jeff!

I'm sorry but I'm going to have to bail on this one. Another meetup spot opened up on a group I've been waiting to join for a couple of months. See you next time

Monica, I missed last weekend, I didn't realize there were two in a row. My foot feels okay, the shots helped so if a spot opens this weekend let me know! Thanks!

Why did I think this hike was last week?!? Am I losing it?

    July 29, 2014

    • Frank

"Julio" did it this past Saturday w/ his "SF Bay Area Outings" group, and I was there, but I'll do it again because the weather on the coast is the best option around this weekend.

Hey Friends, I am so depressed! I had two cortisone shots in my foot today and the doctor told me I have to lay off for three weeks to a month...I compromised and said that I will stay home tomorrow, but after that I can't promise anything! He frowned! Anyway, this is one of my favorite hikes and I am so bummed that I have to miss it! Have a great hike and toast me at the top! Jeanne
