1199 East Beach, San Francisco, CA
This is a 9 mile walk from San Francisco Crissy Field over the bridge to Sausalito, then Ferry ride back to Fisherman's wharf and then continue walk back to Crissy Field. Lunch in Sausalito and a side stop to visit the Wave Organ.
The Meet Spot: Meet at the Crissy Field parking lot on Mason Street, also known as the East Beach lot, I think. The best way to get directions is to go to the Exploratorium website (http://www.exploratorium.edu/visit/location_directions/pdfs/@South%20bay%20map%20and%20instructions.pdf) and follow the directions to their lot, which is right next door to the Crissy Field lot. In fact, if the Crissy Field lot is full when you get there, park at the Exploratorium lot and walk over. Both free. Here are written directions, it takes about an hour from 280/85 intersection. Directions: Take 280 north to 19th Ave.; pass through Golden Gate Park; right on Geary; left on Van Ness, move into left lanes; left on Lombard, get into right lane; right on Divisadero; left on Marina; through stop sign; right into parking lot. Doyle Drive construction requires this route. We will meet in front of the cafe, to the right as you enter the parking lot. Get a hot drink if it's open, there are plenty of "facilities" along the way.
The Carpool: From the 280/Page Mill/Arastradero park and ride at 7:45 am. Please comment if you want to carpool so I know who to expect. We can also arrange different carpool spot if this one not convenient.
The Walk: We'll walk the Crissy Field promenade along the waters edge to the bridge. If we haven't started late, we can check out the warming hut for a few minutes. We won't stop at Fort Point, but come back some time if you haven't been, it's kinda cool. Over the bridge and then under (also kinda cool) and pass by the new Cavallo Point hotel and spa and Discovery Museum. Then along the road (wide path and sidewalk) into Sausalito waterfront area. Lunch. Catch the 12:55 Blue and Gold Ferry to Fisherman's Wharf. Through the wharf area and Fort Mason, and then along the Marina Green. The Wave Organ is right near the end, so will be optional in case anyone is pressed for time. End time about 3:30ish?
Lunch: Please send suggestions for lunch. Lori's group went to the Sausalito Bakery & Cafe because it does not require reservations.
The Ferry: The ferry costs $10.50. You can buy your ticket in advance from the website if you want, but not necessary. Blue and Gold Ferry website (http://www.blueandgoldfleet.com/ferry-services/).
The Wave Organ: This is a wave-activated acoustic sculpture located on the jetty near the Yacht Harbor. Sounds cool, I'm looking forward to seeing it, hope the tide is high, it's supposed to sound better. Info here (http://www.exploratorium.edu/visit/wave_organ/).
Note: Dress in layers and expect any kind of weather. Will only cancel if there is a terrible rain storm, which we shouldn't expect in Sept, right? I put in a request for sunny, clear day, but please don't blame the host if it's foggy and cold :)
