HIKE DESCRIPTION:  From the Harvey Bear Ranch Entrance (San Martin), we will go up the Harvey Bear Trail to the Coyote Ridge Trail and loop back down on the San Ysidro and Willow Springs Trails...8 miles...(can be shortened to 5 miles).  Bring lunch/snack for a break on the ridge overlooking Coyote Lake.  Our trails are wide park roads that wind up and down through oak-studded canyons and top out on grassy ridgelines providing lovely views of the lake and the south Santa Clara Valley.  A flat easy loop trail circles from the parking lot if anyone wanted to do some flat loops...good information for us to have for quick outings with friends!
DIRECTIONS:  Go south on 85/101. From Highway 101 in San Martin, take the San Martin Ave. exit; proceed east on San Martin Ave. for 2 miles.  The entrance to the park is on the left, one-quarter mile east of Foothill Ave., BIG SIGN AT ENTRANCE!
CARPOOL OR CARAVAN: LEAVE BY 8:30 TO CARPOOL/CARAVAN from St. Edward's Church, 15040 Union Ave., at Ronda Drive, San Jose; enter parking lot from Ronda Drive.  OR MEET AT 9:00 AT THE HARVEY BEAR RANCH TRAILHEAD.

NOTE: Rain does not cancel this hike!  Meet at St. Edward's at 8:30, and we will go somewhere nearby (Tour de Los Gatos or Almaden) with a better surface...and perhaps stop at a coffee shop along the way or after the hike/walk.

Very beautiful, huge meadows, lots of cows and calves...everything so peaceful and feeling like spring already. Practically no elevation. Thanks Jane for a very lovely outing.

See you all at the carpool. Arrive to leave at 8:30. Others meet at trailhead at 9. Think sunshine and lovely vistas; bring water, snack, hiking sticks, and dress in layers!

But they have been charging National Park entrance fee all these years being a National Monument.

The Santa Cruz annual Fungus Fair is this weekend. From our hike location, you are close to Hwy 152, the road that takes you to Watsonville/Santa Cruz, so you could go afterr the hike. The fair also runs on Sunday. Just search "santa cruz fungus fair" for more info.

I went here a few years ago during a deluge. It was a terrific workout - much of the trail was a ranch road and it was so slick with mud that if you tried to stand still, you would slide downhill. It was literally two steps forward, one step back. I highly recommend this hike in the rain!

I decided to go and now I'm on the wait list. It's a long drive, but I'm in NY the following weekend so I can't miss this much hiking! I know that everyone on the wait list will make it on.
