Basket maker Charles Kennard offers a materials and techniques workshop featuring the ancient craft of basket making. Mr. Kennard is a long-time student of central California-Indian technique: twined and coiled baskets, as well as several European techniques, including bee-hive weaving. For more than a decade he has given presentations and workshops on traditional uses of native plants in basket making throughout the Bay Area. This will be a hands-on workshop: each participant making a tule basket. Mr. Kennard will display a variety of baskets and discuss their construction and the plants from which they are made. Plants include tule, rush, willow, and redbud. Students will learn about growing, collecting, and harvesting the plants. This workshop may hold special interest for teachers who are thinking about student projects that explore greater understanding of California's indigenous people. Gardeners may want to create a basketry garden with the same plants that were used by the Miwok and other regional tribes and many of the plants used in Mr. Kennard's work will be available for sale at the Middlebrook Gardens Nursery. Payment can be made in advance through Paypal on website or at the event upon arrival. RSVP by email with "Basket Making" in the subject line.
